WINNECONE, Wis. (Oct. 16, 2010) -
Matched up against four other top-10-ranked opponents, the North Central College men's cross country affirmed its status as the top-ranked NCAA Division III team in the nation on Saturday, placing seven runners in the top 25 and winning the 37-team University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational at Lake Breeze Golf Course.

The nation's No. 1-ranked team for the past four weeks, the Cardinals scored a dominant victory on a fast course, tallying 49 points to give them a 29-point margin of victory over eighth-ranked Calvin College (78). Ninth-ranked New York University finished third (138), while second-ranked Washington University (Mo.) placed fourth (146) and the seventh-ranked University of WIsconsin-Stevens Point finished fifth (150).

At the front of the 575-man field was North Central's Michael Spain, who completed the 8,000-meter (five-mile) course in 24 minutes, 22 seconds, his fastest time of the season. Spain, who remains undefeated this fall, prevailed by 17 seconds over his closest challenger, Michael Burnstein of Washington.

Placing fifth individually was Matt Perez (24:45), while Nathan Warstler finished 12th (24:52), Timothy Hird placed 14th (24:54), and Neal Klein finished 17th (24:59) to complete the Cardinals' scoring, while Dan Kerley and Matt Brinkmeier also cracked the top 25, placing 21st (25:05) and 22nd (25:06), respectively.

North Central will attempt to collect its 37th consecutive College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship on Oct. 30, when it travels to Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Ill., for the 2010 CCIW meet.
