BOONE, N.C. -- Junior Ryan Hopkins placed third overall to lead the Davidson Wildcats to a fourth-place team finish at the 2010 SoCon Cross Country Championships Saturday morning in Boone, N.C.

Hopkins finished third with a time of 24:40.34, just behind runner-up Joey Thompson of UNCG (24:39.05) and individual champion Emmanuel Kirwa of Chattanooga (24:29.40). The Wildcats got a second top-10 performance in sophomore Demetrios Pagonis, who was 10th with a time of 25:05.73.

Senior Charlie Schmitt finished 26th in 25:57.68, and junior Ian Tupper (30th, 26:01.95) and sophomore Wes Reynolds (31st, 26:02.23) rounded out the scoring for the Wildcats.

"It was a solid effort, but the results were not there today for the team," said Davidson head coach Gary Andrew. "We'll get together and look to break into the top 15 at the regionals."

For a sixth straight season, host Appalachian State won the team title with just 55 points as all five Mountaineers placed inside the top 20. UNCG finished second with 66 points and four top-20 performances, followed by Chattanooga, who had 74 and two top-5 runners.

The Wildcats were next with 100 points, followed by Furman (118), Elon (153), Western Carolina (180) and the College of Charleston (197). Samford (236), The Citadel (278) and Wofford (292) rounded out the field.

Hopkins was named to the All-Southern Conference first team. He was named to the second team in 2009. Pagonis earned his first All-SoCon honors, as he was named to the second team. Grayam Sailor-Tynes placed 35th in 26:11.18 to earn SoCon All-Freshman honors.

Davidson will look for a strong performance at the NCAA Southeast Region Championships Saturday, November 13 in Louisville, Ky.
