Men win LSC title; women third

Men's Results / Women's Results

ABILENE – The ACU men's cross country team ran its Lone Star Conference championship streak to 20 Saturday morning as the Wildcats ran away from the field at Sherrod Park.

The ACU women rebounded from last year's disappointing eighth-place finish to finish a solid third behind champion Midwestern State and runner-up Angelo State.

On the men's side, ACU senior Amos Sang won his second straight individual championship, covering the 8-kilometer course in 23:49.50, easily outdistancing runner-up Mohamed Noor of Eastern New Mexico, who finished in 24:28.86.

ACU senior Cleophas Tanui was third in 24:30.91, while Romain Rybicki was sixth in 24:54.48.  Sang's win also marked the 20th straight year that an ACU athlete won the men's individual championship.

The Wildcats won the title with 54 points, while Eastern New Mexico was second with 68 points, followed by East Central with 90 points.  Cameron was fourth with 109 points and Texas A&M-Commerce was fifth with 124 points.

On the women's side, ACU was strong at the top as Anais Belledant won the individual title, covering the course in 16:07.74, while Chloe Susset was third (16:29.76) and Alyse Goldsmith was fifth (16:35.64).  However, ACU's next-best finisher was 50th, causing the Wildcats to drop to third.

Brissia Montalvo of Midwestern State led the Mustangs with a second-place finish (16:19.77) with defending individual champion Sydney Cole finishing sixth (16:40.82).  Midwestern's depth was the key to its victory as the Mustangs saw their top five runners all finish in the top 16.

The Mustangs won the team title with 46 points, while Angelo State was second with 79 points and ACU third with 119 points.  Eastern New Mexico was fourth with 132 points and Central Oklahoma fifth with 145 points.

The women were supposed to have run 6 kilometers, but the pack took a wrong turn midway through the race, shortening the distance to 4.5 kilometers.

Both the ACU men's and women's teams will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 20, when they run in the NCAA Division II South Central Region championship meet in Warrensburg, Mo.  The national championship meet is set for Saturday, Dec. 4, in Louisville, Ky.
