Track & Field Lends Helping Hand To James Island Connector Run

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's track and field team lent a helping hand with registration on Friday for the 12th Annual James Island Connector 10K Run and 5K Walk to be held on Saturday, Nov. 6, at Cannon Park.

CofC head coach Amy Seago and her student-athletes spent the afternoon meeting and handing out race packets to participants at the Whole Foods Market in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. Several Cougar Athletics coaches and staff members will be running or walking in this weekend's race which benefits The Gavalas Kolanko Foundation. Many have trained over the last two months in preparation for the event.

"The GKF is such a great organization," Seago said. "They give so much to the College of Charleston and we thought this was a great opportunity for us to give back and help them in their fundraising efforts."

GKF is a 509 c3 public charity, established by Nicholas B. Gavalas and Dr. Ronald Kolanko to help students, including students at The College, with disabilities reach their secondary educational goals. Mr. Gavalas and Dr. Kolanko came together to form the GKF in 1999 after becoming aware of the costly requirements for students with disabilities wishing to attend college. Most recently, The GKF was named winner of the Blue Chip Community Service Award, a prestigious recognition from the president of MassMutual Financial Group.
