TERRE HAUTE, Ind.
– Eastern Kentucky University freshman Soufiane Bouchikhi finished 49th out of 246 runners at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships on Monday afternoon, covering the 10K course at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in a time of 30:36.7.

The Antwerp Belgium native finished nine spots and less than seven seconds short of All-American status.

Liberty’s Sam Chelanga – who defeated Bouchikhi at the Southeast Regionals two weeks ago – was pushed by Arizona’s Stephen Sambu for much of the race, but eventually defended his title by winning his second consecutive national championship with a time of 29:22.2.

Oklahoma State also repeated as team champs, defeating its nearest opponent, Florida State, by a large margin of 120 points.

Bouchikhi became the fourth Colonel to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the last four years, joining Jacob Korir and Joseph Maina (2007) and Wesley Ruttoh (2009), when he finished third at the Southeast Regionals on Nov. 13 in a time of 30:18.8. Korir, who was a three-time All-American in cross country and placed sixth at the NCAA Championships his senior year, finished 71st in a time of 32:17.1 as a freshman in 2004.

Bouchikhi was named the 2010 OVC Male Cross Country Runner of the Year after winning the OVC Championships on Oct. 30 with an 8K time of 24:56.73 and leading the men’s team to its fifth consecutive conference title.

He was the OVC’s lone representative at the NCAA Championships on Monday.
