CHARLESTON,Ill.- Kicking their season off on Friday Dec. 10th, the women’s track and field team will look to start their season off right at the Eastern Illinois Early Bird Invitational in Charleston, Ill. Coming off back-to-back second place finishes in the Atlantic Sun Conference, the ladies look to finally get over the hurdle and claim a title of their own.
Competing against six other teams from across the Midwest, the Owls are traveling the furthest for this indoor meet than any other this season. They will be contending with Chicago State, Cincinnati, Indiana State, Northern Illinois, Butler and Eastern Illinois. Head track and field coach Andrew Eggerth, in his first season as coach, is hoping the meet will be a positive learning experience for the team.
“Because of our late start to our training, I am not expecting a lot this weekend other than for them to give it 100 percent,” Eggerth said. “I want this meet to give them some experience in a competitive setting. We have started a new technique and I want this meet to stabilize that for them. Overall, it is a specialized practice for us.”
Participating in their first of four meets before their trip to the A-Sun Conference Championship, the women will be running, jumping or throwing in 12 different events. They will be competing without the distance runners of their team due to their needing time to adjust after their recent end to the cross country season.
The Owls are returning many of their core women from last season while welcoming some new faces to the team. Back for another season are current Kennesaw State record holders Jill Arthur (triple jump), Michelle Quimby (pole vault), Jessica Lumpkin (weight throw), Victoria Jackson (200m) and Cynthia Davis (55 and 60m dash). Five new freshman look to make their mark on the Kennesaw State indoor track and field record books this weekend as well.
