KENT, Ohio – The Slippery Rock University women's indoor track and field team opened its 2010-11 season Friday evening at the Kent State University Golden Flash Gala. The Rock had 10 competitors post a conference-qualifying standard in at least one event.
Crystal Burnick was the highest-placed finisher in any event for SRU on the first day of the two-day meet, placing second in the 5,000-meter run with a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying time of 18:02.92.
The Rock's pole vaulters stood out Friday with five individuals placing in the top-10, all with PSAC qualifying clearances.
Kelly Fischer led the way with a clearance of 3.40 meters to place third.
Julia Cain cleared the same height, but placed sixth on misses. The mark of 3.40m is just shy of the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standard of 3.50m.
Teresa Parker placed seventh with a clearance of 3.25m, followed by
Jocelyn Cochran and
Angela Schroeder tied for 10th at 3.10m.
Kim Stitt and
Kelly Bruder each posted impressive performances in the pentathlon, placing sixth and seventh with each of them scoring above 3,000 points.
Stitt was on pace to come close to the Slippery Rock school record, but struggled in the long jump late in the day. She placed sixth with a score of 3,093 points. Bruder followed in seventh at 3,002 points. The NCAA provisional qualifying mark is 3,300 points.
Friday's PSAC qualifiers were capped by a pair of throwers, as
Jade Hambrick and
Sandy Kakraba each reached the standard in the weight throw. Hambrick placed 25th with a throw of 13.54 meters, while Kakraba was 30th with a toss of 12.73m
Only the pentathlon, pole vault, weight throw, long jump and 5,000-meter run were contested Friday night. The Rock will continue competition at the Golden Flash Gala Saturday with the remainder of the events. Live results will be available throughout the day at the link above.
Slippery Rock will break after this weekend for the holidays and will not return to competition until the last weekend in January.
