Cardinals Defend Home Turf in Opener

Jan. 21, 2011 -  Posting nine qualifying marks for the national championships and setting three new facility records, the North Central College men's track and field team opened the home portion of its schedule with a win Friday, placing first in the seven-team Cardinal Opener at Al B. Carius Track.

The Cardinals won their second meet in as many weeks fueled by several outstanding performances in the field events. North Central secured four qualifying marks in the pole vault alone, as Josh Winder won with an automatic qualifying mark of 16 feet, 8 3/4 inches, while John Wood (16'4 3/4"), Thomas Stacey (16'0 3/4") and Peter Geraghty (15'7") provisionally qualified by placing second, third, and fourth, respectively.

The Cardinals' other automatic qualifer came in the 35-pound weight throw, as Robert Kapustka uncorked a throw of 61 feet, 9 3/4 inches to win the event and establish a new North Central record. Zachariah Heerspink won the high jump, clearing 6'9" to improve his provisional qualifying mark and establish a new facility record.

North Central claimed the top four spots in the 5,000-meter run, as Michael Spain's winning time of 14:30.53 provisionally qualified him for the national championships and set a new track record. Neal Klein placed second in 14:52.15, also securing a provisional qualifying mark, while Kevin Sparks finished third in 15:05.25.

The Cardinals also got a provisional mark in the sprint events, as Daniel Benton won the 400-meter dash in 49.51 seconds. Benton also won the 200-meter dash (22.45). Robert Lott finished third in the 200 (22.72) and placed second in the 60-meter dash (7.03).

North Central got a first-place finish in the distance medley relay as well, as Albert Ciolek, Scott Foley, John Crain and Mitch Gilbert teamed up to finish in 10:55.17.

North Central hosts the Cardinal Quad on Friday, Jan. 28 at 5 p.m.
