Women's Track Second in Season Opener

Jan. 21, 2011 -  The North Central College women's track and field team opened the season within the friendly confines of Al B. Carius Track on Friday, achieving two first-place finishes and two provisional national championship qualifying marks in placing second in the seven-team Cardinal Opener.

The Cardinals totaled 131 points in the competition, placing second only to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh's score of 163 1/2. Emory University (Ga.) placed third with 87 points.

North Central got a win in the 400-meter dash, as Sheila Walsh crossed the finish line in 58.47 seconds to provisionally qualify for the indoor national championships. Walsh also placed third in the 200-meter dash (26.74).

The Cardinals' other first-place effort came from Amanda Laesch, who posted a track-record time of 5:07.64 in the mile run. North Central got a provisional qualifying mark from Kayla Murphy, who placed second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.85 seconds. Murphy also finished second in the 200 (26.21).

Other second-place finishes came from Lauren Hooks in the 3,000-meter run (10:34.29) and Lauren Brightmore in the 400 (59.25), while Melissa Savino placed third in the 60-meter hurdles (9.39).

The Cardinals host the Cardinal Quad on Friday, Jan. 28 at 5 p.m.
