Men's Track Breezes To Upstate Challenge Championship

1/23/2011 6:36:00 PM

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men scored 235 points to easily win the Upstate Challenge, held on Friday and Saturday in Barton Hall. The Big Red was well clear of Binghamton (96), Syracuse (69), Buffalo (65), Cortland (55) and Ithaca College (16). The Big Red had 12 IC4A qualifiers to go along with nine event wins.

A number of young athletes helped lead the way for Cornell. Freshman Chris Bain won the 60 with a time of 6.85 and was followed closely by Jedidiah Adarquah-Yiadom, who was 6.93; both were again under the IC4A standard as they have been at every meet this season. Another freshman, Kinsley Ojukwu, was the first collegiate finisher in the triple jump, reaching an IC4A-qualifying 49-2 1/2. His classmate Steven Bell was second at 47-3 3/4 and senior Julian Remouns was third at 47-3 1/2 as they also surpassed the IC4A standard. There was another freshman winner for Cornell in the 1000, as Eric Bice ran an impressive 2:28.67; junior Chris Jakobsen joined Bice in qualifying for the IC4As as he was third at 2:30.27. In the 5000, sophomore Bobby Micikas opened up with a first place run of 15:16.27 in the 5000. In the long jump, freshman David Salbert just missed the Eastern standard but still finished second, reaching 22-11 1/4.

Upperclassmen also did very well as junior Chris Arlinghaus cleared 6-8 3/4 to win the high jump and qualified for IC4As; freshman Hercules Stancil was third at 6-6 1/4.  In the throws, junior Bob Belden yet again continued to excel as he won the weight throw with a heave of 50-7 1/4 and then came back to place second in the shot in a fine 55-7 1/2. Sophomore Bob Fiedler was second in the wieght in a personal best 53-1 3/4. On the track, seniors Matt De Silva and Nate Edelman placed first and second in the mile as DeSilva ran 4:17.50 and Edelman crossed the line in 4:20.17. Junior Dan Hagberg was fourth in the 60 hurdles in 8.35 and classmate Vince Formica barely missed his PR and the IC4A standard in placing third in the heptathlon with a score of 4,782.

One of the biggest non-winning highlights on the day came in the 500 as junior Dan Thomas led a strong 2-3-4-5 showing by the Big Red as all four runners will advance to the IC4As. Thomas was second in a big personal best 1:04.93 and was followed closely by sophomore Nick Wade, who also set a PR in running 1:04.99. Junior Brian Freitas was third in 65.03 and junior Ken McClain crossed the line in fifth place in 65.44.

The 4x400 of Boyd, Freitas, senior Chris Tait and Thomas closed out the meet very well for the Big Red, as they ran 3:20.17 for first.
