Lantz Wins 800M at SoCon Indoor Track Championships

CLEMSON, S.C. – Freshman Andrew Lantz made his first Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships a memorable one, as the Wildcat rookie won the meet's 800-meter run to lead the Davidson men's track and field team to a fourth-place finish overall Sunday on the second and final day of competition.

Lantz did not beat his first-day time of one minute, 54.80 seconds, but his time of 1:54.99 was enough to win, as he edged Samford freshman Henry Stevens-Carty by 0.11 seconds. He becomes the ninth Wildcat ever to win an individual title at the indoor SoCon Championships, and is the first since Dan Gibson won the 3000-meter run in 2002.

Lantz was nearly joined at the top of the podium by senior Charlie Schmitt, who narrowly missed winning the 5000-meter run with the second-best performance all-time by a Wildcat. Schmitt crossed the line in 14:41.09, but Appalachian State's Sean Soderman edged him out, winning in 14:39.59. The finish gave Schmitt a pair of runner-up finishes in the difficult distance double, as he was narrowly edged by an Appalachian State runner in the 3000-meter run Saturday.

Junior Ryan Hopkins and sophomore Demetrios Pagonis also scored in the event for Davidson. Hopkins took fourth in 14:46.89, while Pagonis took seventh in 14:52.49. Both times rank among the top-10 best all-time in school history for the event.

Senior JinHan Song placed fourth in the 400-meter dash in 50.10 seconds, besting his preliminary round time of 50.37 to give him the second-and third-fastest times in the event all-time at Davidson.

The 'Cats' 4x400-meter relay team of junior Taylor Martin, junior Lee Dorsey, sophomore Eduardo Vaca and Song reached the podium, placing third in a Davidson top-10 all-time 3:28.54.

The Appalachian State men and women won the respective team titles. The title was the eighth for the Mountaineer men since 2000 and third in a row, and it is the ninth women's title for Appalachian State since 2000.

The Wildcats ranked fourth after the first day of competition Saturday and held on to their place with 53.33 points, edging The Citadel, whom finished with 49. Following App. State (216.33 points) was Western Carolina (149) and Samford (127.33).

Schmitt led a strong distance effort on the first day with a second-place finish in the 3000m in a career-best 8:24.88. The performance ranks third all-time in school history and was within two seconds of race-winner Chris Moen (Appalachian State), who crossed the line in 8:23.42. Hopkins took fourth for the Wildcats in a career-best 8:26.62, the fifth-fastest time in the event in school history, while Pagonis took eighth in a career-best 8:31.18, good for seventh all-time at Davidson.

The 'Cats also earned a top-five finish in the distance medley relay, as senior Jonathan Koch, Martin, sophomore Will Mitchell and freshman Grayam Sailor-Tynes combined to finish in 10:22.24, which ranks as the fourth-best performance all-time for Davidson.

Senior Bryce Jones tied for eighth in the pole vault in a school-record 4.35m (14-3 1/4), and he also competed in the 200m, leading all Wildcats in 23.47. Jones had just set a new Davidson pole vault standard last week at South Carolina of 4.30m.

The Wildcats will next open the outdoor season Mar. 18-19 at the Charlotte 49er Classic.
