Florida State Men, Women Lead Division I Program of the Year Standings

NEW ORLEANS – With the conclusion of the indoor track & field season, standings have been updated in the Division I Program of the Year races for the 2010-2011 school year. Only the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship remains to determine the winners, and, so far, the leaders of the John McDonnell Program of the Year Award given to the most outstanding men’s program and the Terry Crawford Program of the Year Award bestowed on the most outstanding women’s program is Florida State University.

The race for the men’s award is led by Florida State’s seven points, earned in finishing as the nation’s runner-up at the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championships plus the fifth-place showing notched at the national indoor track & field championships. Stanford currently stands second with 12½ points (4th XC, =8th ITF), followed by Indiana in third with 13½ (7th XC, =6th ITF) and Oklahoma in fourth (5th XC, =13th ITF).

Cross country national champions Oklahoma State did not register any team points at the indoor championships, and indoor champions Florida did not qualify for the national cross country championships.

Two-time defending men’s Program of the Year winner Oregon sits tenth in the overall standings after a sixth-place cross country finish and a 26th-place tally at the indoor meet.

On the women’s side, Florida State also leads, but with a much tighter margin. Only two points separate the top three teams as Oregon and Villanova trail Florida State 11-13. Florida State was second at the national cross country meet and took ninth as a team at the indoor championships.

Villanova, the NCAA cross country champions, placed 12th at the indoor championships. Oregon, the NCAA indoor track & field champions, placed 12th at the national cross country championships in the fall.

The Oregon women are the two-time defending winners of the Terry Crawford Program of the Year Award.

The NCAA Outdoor Track & Field champions will be determined June 8-11, in Des Moines, Iowa.

The John McDonnell Program of the Year Award is named after USTFCCCA Hall of Famer and former Arkansas head coach John McDonnell.  McDonnell’s Arkansas teams won a combined 40 National Championships and finished in the top ten in cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field in 24 of his 36 seasons in Fayetteville. Five of his teams won the NCAA Triple Crown.

The NCAA Division I John McDonnell Program of the Year Award is awarded annually to the most outstanding NCAA Division I men’s cross country/track & field program.  The award honors the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field seasons) based on the institution’s finish at the NCAA Division I Championships.

In order to be eligible for the award, teams must qualify for each of the NCAA Championships.  Scoring is based on the team’s finish at each NCAA Division I Championship in cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field (i.e. 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points, 31st = 31 points) with the lowest total score for all three championships combined determining the award recipient. Ties among schools split points for positions taken.
