WEST POINT, N.Y. - Several members of the Manhattan College outdoor track & field team overcame the cold and windy conditions at Army's Shea Stadium to post impressive performances at the Dick Shea Open on Saturday afternoon.
Manhattan's best performance was turned in by Katelyn Savage (North Haledon, N.J.) in the women's long jump. She leaped 5.33 meters (17 feet, six inches) to capture second place. Savage also finished seventh in the triple jump with a mark of 10.21 m (33'6). In the women's 100 meters, Tiffany Goodwin (East Meadow, N.Y.) placed fourth in a time of 13.04 seconds, while Elizabeth Rosenberger (Ramsey, N.J.) took sixth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:12.02).
Three third place finishes were the highlight on the men's side. Kevin Rheinheimer (Newton, N.J.) was third in the javelin with a throw of 54.95 m (180'3) and Mike Carroll (Nanuet, N.Y.) captured third place in the high jump (1.89 m, 6'2¼). Carroll also finished seventh in the long jump (6.39 m, 20'11¾) and 10th in the 110 meter hurdles (16.26). The Jaspers also placed third in the 4 x 400 meter relay, as the tandem of Tyrek Barney (Hempstead, N.Y.), Dimitri Mobley (Abington, Pa.), Nick Estis (Bardonia, N.Y.) and Carlos Petrovich (Yonkers, N.Y.) posted a time of 3:32.21.
Other top performers for the men's team were Stephen Jochem (Gallup, N.M.), who placed fifth in the 1500 meters (4:13.21), James Cascio (Purdys, N.Y.), the fifth-place finisher in the triple jump (11.30 m, 37'1), Rokas Kirlys (Kamaji, Lithuania), who was eighth in the discus throw (41.47 m, 136'1), and Matt Waldron (Lyndhurst, N.J.), who finished eighth in the pole vault (4.05 m, 13'3½).
Next weekend, Manhattan is back in action at the Sam Howell Invitational. The two-day meet gets underway on Friday night at Princeton University.
