Men's Track Captures First Chance Invitational

Apr. 2, 2011-- The North Central College men's track & field team tallied one automatic and three provisional qualifiers on Friday and Saturday, opening up the outdoor season by winning the nine-team First Chance Invitational at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.

The Cardinals' 225.5 points easily outdistanced runner up University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's 117 while Harper College was third with 105.5 points.

Michael Spain opened the meet on Friday with a huge effort in the 10,000-meters, winning the event in an automatic qualifying time of 29:37.82. Teammate Nathan Warstler was second in 31:20.63.

Daniel Benton raced to the victory in the 400-meter dash, clocking a provisional qualifying time of 47.99 seconds while Randall Ellison captured the 200-meter dash in 22.38. Bai Kabba and Robert Lott joined Benton and Ellison to capture the 4x100-meter relay in 42.35 while Benton, Kabba, Jon Howard and Jonathon Caron closed out the meet by winning the 4x400-meter relay in 3:17.34.

Peter Geraghty and Josh Winder shared top honors in the pole vault, both clearing a provisional qualifying height of 16 feet, 5 1/4 inches. Zachariah Heerspink was second in the high jump, clearing 6' 4" while Robert Kapustka was second in the discus throw (149' 10") and Richard Kingery was runner-up in the javelin throw (168' 7").

Additional second place finishers included Robert Lott in the 100-meter dash (11.19) and Joseph Michals in the 400-meter hurdles.

The Cardinals return to the track on Friday, April 8, competing at the Chicagoland Outdoor Championships.
