Fleet tops 198 feet in hammer

AUSTIN -- Tyler Fleet turned in the first 60-meter hammer throw of his career Thursday to highlight performances by the ACU Wildcats on the second of four days of the 84th annual Texas Relays.
Fleet, a Wildcat junior from Tyler Lee, threw 60.57 meters (198 feet, 9 inches) in the third round after two fouls to advance to the final, but he did not improve.  He placed eighth in the men's university-college hammer throw, which was won at 221-1 by Sam Houston State's Chris Cralle, a former high school opponent of Fleet.
Fleet's throw exceeds the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Division II outdoor championships May 26-28 in Turlock, Calif.  He is a two-time Lone Star Conference champion (2008, 2010) in the hammer throw.
Fleet will also compete in the men's university discus throw here Friday at 5:30 p.m. with ACU teammate Nick Jones, two-time NCAA Division II discus champ.
Also here Thursday, ACU's Kevin Johnson won his heat of the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 54.72 to qualify for Saturday's final.
In the women's hammer throw, ACU's Jessica Sloss threw 158-6 in the prelims but did not advance.
