Men's Track Wins Chicagoland Championships

CHICAGO, Ill. (Apr. 9, 2011)-- Winning six events, the North Central College men's track & field squad secured its third consecutive Chicagoland Outdoor Championship on Saturday at the University of Chicago's Ted Haydon Track.

The Cardinals topped the 20 team field after accumulating 190 points in the team standings. Division I University of Illinois-Chicago was second with 114 points while host University of Chicago was third with 99 points. College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin rival Carthage College was a distant fourth with 69 points.

In the sprints, Daniel Benton raced the victory in the 400-meter dash, clocking a provisional qualifying time of 47.73 seconds while Jon Howard placed third in 49.20. Joe Michals prevailed in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking a 56.09 while the Cardinals closed the meet with a second place showing in the 4x400-meter relay as Howard, Jonathan Caron, Dionte Hackler and Randal Ellison clocked a 3:18.09.

Neal Klein claimed the 10,000-meter run, recording a provisional qualifying effort after crossing the tape in 31:04.87. Yonatan Mascote was second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:39.29) while Matt Perez was third in the 5,000-meter run (15:11.12). 

Josh Winder cleared a provisional qualifying 16 feet 4 3.4 inches to win the pole vault while Zachariah Heerspink won the high jump with a mark of 6' 7". Frank Wleklinski was second in the pole vault, vaulting 14' 11".

In the throws, Robert Kapustka placed second in both the shot put (50' 6 1/4") and discus throw (152' 0") while earning third place in the hammer throw (168' 10"). Richard Kingery was third in the javelin throw with a toss of 162' 2".

Joe Schneiderbauer was the Cardinals' sixth event winner, claiming the grueling two-day decathalon after accumulating 5,855 points while Joseph Hletko was third with 5,524 points.

North Central returns to action on Saturday, Apr. 16, competing at the Wheaton College Twilight Invitational.
