JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Kennesaw State women’s track and field team opened up day one of competition at the Atlantic Sun Outdoor Conference Championship sitting in first place after seven events. Leading the pack with 52 points, the group has a slim lead over host school North Florida who is close behind with 48.

“We looked strong in all of our events today,” head track and field coach Andy Eggerth said. “We had lifetime bests being broken and points being scored in every event. Where we sit right now, we have set ourselves up for being very successful in the remainder of the competition.”

Starting the weekend off with the heptathlon on the women’s side, Naomi Mack began her quest for a second straight first place finish in the six event competition. Mack kicked off the day with a first place finish in the 100 meter hurdles and soon followed with another first in the shot put. Her success in the first four events has Mack sitting pretty in first place going into day two.

Closing out her career at Kennesaw State with a bang, Mackenzie Howe blew away the competition in the 10,000 meters. As the already proud owner of the 10,000 meter school record and A-Sun conference record, Howe set the new bar at 35:07.59 and finished in first place. This is the third straight season that Howe has finished first in the 10,000 meter race.

In the women’s pole vault, all four Owls that competed earned points towards the team’s total score. Michelle Quimby came out on top for Kennesaw State with a second place finish and top clearance of 3.55 meters. Teresa Smith was right behind in third with a 3.40 meter leap. Kacey Hightower and Lauren Hutchinson finished seventh and eighth, respectively.

Jessica Lumpkin added another All-Conference award to her already illustrious career for Kennesaw State. In the shot put, she threw a top distance of 12.93 meters for third place. She will have two more shots tomorrow in the javelin and discus.

Racing the preliminaries for the 100 meter hurdles and 100 meter dash today, all the Owls that competed in the race will continue onto the finals Saturday. Tai Dorsett, Naomi Mack and Naquia Williams will be in the 100 hurdles while Victoria Jackson and Cynthia Davis tackle the 100 meter dash.
