PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Despite the high winds and heavy rains creating miserable conditions, several members of the Manhattan College men's and women's track & field teams were able to turn in impressive performances at the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships at Rutgers University's Bauer Track & Field Complex.  The highlight of the meet was the school record in the heptathlon by Andrea Nyback (Koping, Sweden).  Nyback finished with 4856 points to win the competition and qualify for the ECAC Championships.

Nyback finished first in five of the seven events and was second in another to win the competition by more than 500 points.  She shattered the old school mark of 4470 points set by Kate Fecinta at the 1998 ECAC Championships.  Despite a disqualification and no points in the first event, the 100 meter hurdles, Kristi Krull (Tallin, Estonia) rebounded to finish third in the heptathlon with 3636 points.

Malin Olsson (Malmo, Sweden) continued her winning streak in the long jump, leaping 5.75 meters (18 feet, 10½ inches).  Katelyn Savage (North Haledon, N.J.) placed fourth in the long jump (5.46 m, 17'11) and set a personal best in the 100 meters (12.77).  Megan Tice (Hyde Park, N.Y.) became Metropolitan champion in the high jump with a leap of 1.67 m (5'5¾), while Sarah Moore (Irvington, N.Y.) cleared 2.90 m (9'6¼) to take fourth in the pole vault.

On the track, the women's squad was led by the 4 x 800 meter relay squad of Maria Jangsten (Gothenburg, Sweden), Emmy Koskinen (Sodertalje, Sweden), Meghan Hayes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Elizabeth Rosenberger (Ramsey, N.J.), which placed third in a time of 10:08.80.  Individually, Jangsten was fourth in the 800 meters (2:22.46) and Koskinen placed sixth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:07.22).  Heidy Palacios (Yonkers, N.Y.) finished third (58.37) and Jackie Hargrove (Vienna, Va.) took sixth (1:00.24) in the 400 meters.  Manhattan ended up fifth in the team standings with 69 points.  Rutgers collected 178.33 points to win the team title.

The Manhattan men finished with 147 points to win the Metropolitan Championship by 12 points over Rutgers.  Leading the way for the men's squad was Felix Siljeback-Larsen (Vasteras, Sweden), who established a new personal best of 6525 points to win the decathlon.  With that score, he moved into fifth-place on Manhattan's all-time list.

Roman Ewald (Olching, Germany) scored points in three events, including a pair of victories.  He set a personal record of 56.95 m (186'10) to win the hammer throw, then took first in the shot put with a season-best toss of 15.84 m (51'11¾).  He also placed third in the discus (41.91 m, 137'6).  In the shot put, Ewald led a quartet of Manhattan, as Colin Quirke (Los Gatos, Calif.) finished fourth (14.78 m, 48'6), Andrew Trass (River Dell, N.J.) was fifth (14.57 m, 47'9 ¾) and Rokas Kirlys (Kamaji, Lithuania) took sixth (14.12 m, 46'4).  Trass added a silver medal in the javelin (59.44 m, 195'0), while Kirlys was fourth in the discus (40.88 m, 134'1).

In the long jump, Albert Johnson III (Painted Post, N.Y.) finished second with a leap of 6.78 m (22'3) and Dan Duffy (Monroe, N.Y.) secured fourth place with a distance of 6.66 m (21'10 ¼).  Duffy also won the triple jump (13.49 m, 44'3¼).  Mike Carroll (Nanuet, N.Y.) cleared 1.94 m (6'4¼) to take fourth in the high jump.

Tobias Lundgren (Alta, Sweden) placed second in the 5000 meters with a time of 15:08.1.  Justin Chiaravelle (Danbury, Conn.) led four Manhattan scorers in the 110 meter hurdles with a third-place clocking of 15.23 seconds.  In the 400 meter hurdles, Dimitri Mobley (Abington, Pa.) took second in a time of 57.95.

Next weekend, the squad heads to Princeton University for the Larry Ellis Invitational.  The two-day meet gets underway at 12 p.m. on Friday and concludes on Saturday.
