Young honored at Mt. SAC

WALNUT, Calif. – Former ACU track and field standout and Olympic golf medalist Earl Young was at the 53rd Mt. SAC Relays last weekend where he served as an honorary meet referee as meet officials remember what is commonly known as the "Greatest Day in Track and Field History."

Young was part of an historic day of track and field competition in August 1960 that saw the members of the U.S. Olympic Team – in their final tune-up before heading to the Olympic Games in Rome –set six American and five world records involving 14 American athletes over a six-hour span.

Young was part of that record-setting day as a member o the 4x400 relay team that set a world record with a time of 3:05.8.  He ran the second leg behind Eddie Southern and in front of Otis Davis and Jack Yerman.

Young was honored in Abilene last November to commemorate the 50h anniversary of his gold medal-winning performance on the 4x400 relay in Rome.  Yerman was on hand in Abilene to join in on the celebration.
