RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Freshman Malin Olsson (Malmo, Sweden) of the Manhattan College women's track & field team has been selected Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Performer of the Week, the conference office announced today. Olsson won the bronze medal in the women's long jump Championship of America at the 117th edition of the historic Penn Relays last Thursday.
She was in sixth place after five jumps, but uncorked a personal-best leap of 6.12 meters (20 feet, one inch) on her final attempt to move into third. Olsson became the second Manhattan woman ever to break the 20-foot barrier, joining school record-holder Malin Marmbrandt. Then on Saturday at the Lions Invitational, Olsson ran the anchor leg on Manhattan's 4 x 100 meter relay squad that posted an ECAC-qualifying time of 47.79 seconds.
This marks Olsson's first Performer of the Week selection during the outdoor season, but she won the award four different times indoors (Dec. 7, Dec. 14, Jan. 18, Feb. 15). Olsson was also named Most Outstanding Performer for Field Events at the MAAC Indoor Championships.
She will be the favorite in both the long and triple jumps at the MAAC Outdoor Championships, which will take place this weekend at Rider University. Manhattan is the defending champions on both the men's and women's side.
