May 13, 2011-- Five North Central College men's track & field athletes improved or added their name to the national qualifying list while nine total athletes earned qualifying marks at the two-day Dr. Keeler Invitational on Thursday and Friday inside Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
Six of the Cardinals' nine qualifiers came on Thursday.
Peter Geraghty improved his automatic qualifying mark in the pole vault, clearing 16 feet, 11 1/2 inches to finish in a three-way tie for first. Also tying for top honors was teammate
Josh Winder.
John Wood and
Thomas Stacey both improved their provisional qualifying efforts in the vault, clearing 16' 3 1/2" and 15' 11 3/4", respectively, to finish back-to-back in fourth and fifth places.
Robert Kapustka improved his mark in the hammer throw with a provisional qualifying heave of 174' 4", finishing fourth. The senior followed up that effort by improving his throw in the shot put, placing fifth with a toss of 51' 8 1/2".
Daniel Kerley was the lone provisional qualifier on the track on Thursday, placing sixth in the 5,000-meters in 14:44.77.
On Friday,
Yonatan Mascote placed 13th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a provisional time of 9:22.14 while the 4x400-meter relay squad of Jon Caron,
Randal Ellison,
Dionte Hackler and
Jon Howard, raced to a runner-up finish in a provisional time of 3:15.23.
The Cardinals host the Gregory Multi-Events Invitational on Tuesday and Wednesday for decathlon and heptathlon athletes while hosting the Gregory Invitational on Thursday and Friday inside Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
