PRINCETON, N.J. - Manhattan College's Colin Quirke (Los Gatos, Calif.) captured fourth place in the discus throw at the IC4A Outdoor Track & Field Championships from Princeton University's Weaver Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Quirke collected five team points with his toss of 51.62 meters (169 feet, four inches). Overall, the Jaspers are in 12th place in the team standings with 9.5 points after two days of competition.
Roman Ewald (Olching, Germany) joined his teammate in the discus throw, placing 19th with a distance of 47.85 m (157'0). Ewald also competed in the hammer throw on Saturday and took 19th (53.83 m, 176'7) in that event, as well. Brian McGovern (Yonkers, N.Y.), the IC4A indoor champion in the pole vault, tied for seventh place outdoors with a clearance of 4.80 m (15'9).
In addition, Saturday marked the last day of competition in the two-day decathlon. Felix Siljeback-Larsen (Vasteras, Sweden), who was in third place with 3533 points after day one, ended up sixth with 6408 points. On Friday night, Tobias Lundgren (Alta, Sweden) grabbed 21st place in the 10,000 meters (31:29.05).
The women's ECAC Championships are being held concurrently at Princeton, and three Manhattan athletes competed in that meet on Saturday. The best performance was turned in by Malin Olsson (Malmo, Sweden), who took fifth in the long jump with a leap of 5.97 m (19'7). Also scoring points on the women's side was Melissa Yap (Orchard Park, N.Y.) in the pole vault. Yap finished in a four-way tie for seventh place with a clearance of 3.51 m (11'6¼). On the track, Heidy Palacios (Yonkers, N.Y.) ran the 400 meters in a time of 56.51 seconds.
The ECAC/IC4A Championships conclude on Sunday. For the men, Ewald, Quirke and Rokas Kirlys (Kamaji, Lithuanina) will be competing in the shot put, while Andrew Trass (River Dell, N.J.) will throw the javelin and Mike Carroll (Nanuet, N.Y.) is entered in the high jump. Megan Tice (Hyde Park, N.Y.) will be contesting the high jump on the women's side.
