Saturday Recap

PRINCETON, N.J. - A day after taking fourth in the discus throw, Colin Quirke (Los Gatos, Calif.) of the Manhattan College men's track & field team secured fifth place in the shot put at the IC4A Outdoor Championships from Princeton University's Weaver Stadium on Sunday afternoon.  One of three Jaspers competing in the event, Quirke collected four team points with a toss of 16.37 meters (53 feet, 8½ inches).

Also competing in the shot put were Roman Ewald (Olching, Germany) and Rokas Kirlys (Kamaji, Lithuania).  Ewald, who also competed in the discus and hammer throw on Saturday, finished 18th with a mark of 15.54 m (51'0), while Kirlys was 35th (14.64 m, 48'0½).

As a team, Manhattan earned 13.50 points in the three-day meet.  That total was good enough for 25th place in the team standings.  Duke won the IC4A team championship with 73.75 points.

The only Manhattan athlete to compete at the women's ECAC Championships on Sunday was Megan Tice (Hyde Park, N.Y.) in the high jump.  Tice jumped 1.69 m (5'6½), which put her in a four-way tie for eighth place.

Tice's 0.25 points gave the Manhattan women 4.75 as a team.  The Lady Jaspers tied Binghamton for 45th place overall.  Duke also won the women's title, collecting 73.75 points.

While the ECAC/IC4A Championships concluded the 2011 regular season, a handful of Manhattan athletes will likely compete at the NCAA East Regional Championships at the University of Indiana later this month.  For the men, Quirke is currently 14th in the region in the shot put and Brian McGovern (Yonkers, N.Y.) ranks 45th in the pole vault , while Malin Olsson (Malmo, Sweden) is 30th in the women's long jump and Tice is ranked 41st in the women's high jump.  The top 48 athletes in each event advance to the NCAA Regionals.
