ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell men's cross country team will compete at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships at the Audubon Golf Course near the University of Buffalo on Saturday, matching up with runners from 37 other teams in one of the largest regional meets in the nation.

Coming off a fifth-place finish at the Heptagonal Championships two weeks ago, Cornell, ranked No. 7 in the region, will look to improve on last year's sixth-place finish in the regional meet. With a high enough finish on Saturday, the men could potentially qualify for the NCAA Championships at Indiana State on Nov. 21.

Of the six teams ranked ahead of the Big Red in the Northeast, four are in the USTFCCCA national top 30. No. 9 Iona, No. 22 Columbia, No. 29 Syracuse and No. 30 Providence will all race for berths in the NCAA Tournament as well, so the competition will be tough.

Running for the Big Red will be Max Groves, Gabriel Heck, Kevin Johnson, Brett Kelly, Chandler Kemp, Matt McCullough and  Ben Potts.

The top two teams in each of the nine regions plus the top four individuals not on a qualifying team will receive automatic bids to the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. In addition, the NCAA Committee will select 13 at-large teams and two at-large individuals to fill out the 31-team women's field. The at-large team selections are determined based on the order of regional finish and a team's regular season victory total against already qualified teams, among other factors. The committee will announce these final qualifiers on Sunday.
