Men's Track Qualifies Four For IC4As at Penn State Meet

ITHACA, N.Y. – Competing away from Barton Hall for the first time this indoor season, the Big Red track and field teams put forth competitive efforts at Penn State's Nittany Lion Challenge, a six-way meet that included Big East foes Pitt and West Virginia, Maryland from the Atlantic Coast Conference, America East power Albany and host Penn State from the Big 10.

The Cornell men produced four IC4A qualifiers along with nine top-five event finishes. Leading the way was sophomore John Schilkowski, who placed third in a historic 1000: The event's winner set the college record. Schilkowski's time was an IC4A qualifier of 2:24.89. Also impressing was freshman Rutger Admirand, who ran one of the best times by a Cornellian in recent years in the 600, placing second in 1:19.25.Classmate Hong Cho was seventh in 1:22.91.

The Big Red also had an IC4A qualifier from sophomore Kinsley Ojukwu, who qualified for the 60 dash finals in 6.96 and then ran 6.95 to place fourth in the final. He also placed 13th in the 200.

Fellow sophomore Andre Anderson also had a busy day, placing sixth in the 60 hurdles at 8.47 and then seventh in the 400 in 49.59 before coming back to lead off the 4x400. He teamed up with Cho, Admirand and freshman Will Reiss as the team ran 3:24.03 for seventh. Earlier, Reiss placed ninth in the 800 at 1:57.21.

In the field, freshman Stephen Mozia led the way with a third-place effort of 57' 1/4”, another IC4A qualifier. He threw 50' 6” in the weight throw for sixth. Sophomore Tommy Butler cleared 6' 8 1/4” for fourth in the high jump and classmate Steven Bell had a pair of third places, reaching 22' 11 3/4” in the long jump and 46' 9 1/2” in the triple jump. In the vault, sophomore David Kim cleared 15' 3 1/4”, freshman Keith Rayburn went over 14' 9 1/4” for fourth and sophomore Peter Roach cleared the same height for fifth.

Next up for the Big Red is the Upstate Challenge, which begins with the multi-event on Friday evening and picks up with the team scored events on Saturday. After that, Cornell will head to New York City for the Armory Saturday Night Team Challenge on Jan. 28 and then return to Penn State on Feb. 4 for the Sykes-Sabock Team Challenge.
