RIVERDALE, N.Y. - For the second straight week, a member of the Manhattan College women's indoor track & field team has been named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Performer of the Week. Andrea Nyback (Koping, Sweden) was honored after qualifying for the ECAC Championships in both the pentathlon and long jump on Thursday.
Nyback won the pentathlon at the Metropolitan Indoor Championships, finishing with 3709 points. That score was a mere eight points off her school record, and more than 250 points better than the second-place finisher. In the long jump portion of the competition, Nyback had an ECAC-qualifying leap of 5.74 meters (18 feet, 10 inches). She also posted a new personal-best in the shot put with a throw of 11.35 m (37'3).
This marks the third time in her career that Nyback has earned MAAC Performer of the Week honors. She was previously recognized on Dec. 13, 2009 and April 19, 2011. Nyback is the fifth different Jasper to be named MAAC Performer of the Week this season, joining Karolin Wagner (Ribbesbuettel, Germany) (Dec. 13) and Heidy Palacios (Yonkers, N.Y.) (Jan. 24), as well as Roman Ewald (Olching, Germany) (Dec. 6) and Albert Johnson III (Painted Post, N.Y.) (Jan. 24) from the men's team.
The Jaspers participate in one of their most competitive meets of the indoor season this weekend. The two-day New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the Armory Track & Field Center gets underway at 11 a.m. on Friday, with Saturday's action scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. In addition to Manhattan, the top-notch roster of participating schools includes defending National Champions Florida (men) and Oregon (women), as well as perennial powers Arkansas, LSU and Texas A&M, which won both the men's and women's outdoor titles in 2011.
