ITHACA, N.Y. – Competing in a nationally competitive field at Penn State's Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup that included teams from up and down the East Coast as well as teams from the midwest, the Cornell men's track team placed fourth out of 14 teams on Saturday.

The Cornell men won two events with three runner-up showings and produced 16 IC4A qualifiers en route to tallying 71 points, finishing only behind the host Nittany Lions (142), Big East power Connecticut (91.5) and defending Heps champion Princeton (89). Cornell finished ahead of good teams from Liberty and Buffalo.

One of the big highlights for the men came in the high jump, as the Big Red had three IC4A qualifiers. Sophomore Montez Blair cleared 7' 1 3/4” to place second, senior Chris Arlinghaus cleared 6' 10 3/4” for the second straight week to get seventh and sophomore Tommy Butler jumped 6' 8 3/4” to place 10th.

Cornell also had an event win in the field, as sophomore Stephen Bell long jumped 23' 9” to place first, easily an IC4A qualifier. There were two IC4A qualifiers in the throws: Sophomore Stephen Mozia reached 57' 8 1/4” to get second in the shot put, and senior co-captain Bob Belden reached 58' 8” to get seventh in the weight throw. In the pole vault, sophomore Peter Roach and freshman Keith Rayburn both cleared 15' 7” to tie for seventh.

On the track, senior co-captain Dan Hagberg led the way with an impressive event win in the 60 hurdles. After a preliminary round 8.22, Hagberg ran 8.01 to win the 60 hurdles final.

Another competitive effort came in the 800 as junior Nick Wade placed third in a tough field, crossing the line in a seasonal best 1:50.47. Joining him as an IC4A qualifier was sophomore John Schilkowski (13th, 1:53.42) and junior David McCuiston (15th, 1:53.94). Cornell picked up a pair of IC4A qualifiers in the 3000 as juniors Andy Arnold (second, 8:19.74) and Bobby Micikas (sixth, 8:27.17) ran well. Sophomore Eric Bice missed the mile IC4A standard by a mere .05, running 4:14.95 for 10th. Also placing in the top 10 was sophomore Andre Anderson, who was 10th in the 400 in a seasonal best 49.65 and freshman Hong Cho, who was seventh in the 600 in 1:21.16. And in the 60, senior Chase Aaronson (ninth, 6.95) and junior Jedidiah Adarquah-Yiadom (12th, 6.98) barely missed the final, but did run under the IC4A standard.

In the 4x400, the Big Red posted its best time of the season to date as the team of freshman Rutger Admirand, Wade, freshman Cisco Olloqui and senior Brian Fretias placed fourth in 3:15.62. In the distance medley relay, McCuiston, senior Tom Randall, senior Chris Jakobsen and Bice ran 10:20.12 for fourth.

Even as the Big Red impressed at Penn State, a large group of Cornellians competed very well at Ithaca College as the Cornell men had four event wins in the Bomber Challenge on the new facility on South Hill.

Sophomore multi-eventer Mike Rabbit won the 400 in a fine 50.15 and junior Zach Zeller won the 60 hurdles in 8.38. Freshman Jordan Harris was a solid fourth in 8.70. Freshman Han Wei Chew won the triple jump at 45' 7 3/4” and took second in the long jump at 21' 3 1/2” while sophomore Ben Tenpas won the shot put with a mark of 49' 1 3/4”. Junior Mike Murphy was third at 47' 3/4”. In the wight throw, junior Bob Fiedler was second with a heave of 53' 11 3/4”. And in the 800, junior Elliott Rosenberg placed third in 1:57.76.

Next up for Cornell is a series of home meets to close out the month of February. First is the Robert J. Kane Invitational at Barton Hall on Friday and Saturday. After that is the Marc Deneault Invitational on Feb. 18, and then the indoor Heps return to Cornell on Feb. 25-26.
