Men's Track Wins Eight Events Over Weekend at Kane Invite, Valentine Invite

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men had an outstanding weekend, with terrific middle distance and distance showings on Saturday at Boston University's Valentine Invitational and very good efforts at the 27-team Kane Invitational in Barton Hall on Friday and Saturday. Overall on the weekend, the Big Red had a remarkable 27 IC4A qualifiers and won eight events at the Kane Invitational.

In Boston, there were nine IC4A qualifiers in the 800, mile and 5000. Starting with the men's mile, sophomore John Schilkowski moved to No. 4 all-time at Cornell with a fine 4:03.93, second in his heat and the fifth-best college performance of the meet. Also setting personal bests were junior Andy Arnold (4:07.29, just .02 from the school top-10 lists) and junior Will McFall (4:11.59).

Junior Nick Wade ran a very competitive 1:49.92 for seventh in the fast heat of the 800 to produce a seasonal best, and freshman Rutger Admirand impressed with an excellent 1:50.85 to move to No. 3 all-time at Cornell indoors.

In the 5K, juniors Matt McCullough and Brett Kelly moved into the school top 10 lists with a pair of fine races. McCullough was fourth in the fast heat with a time of 14:25.83 and Kelly was fifth in 14:27.08. Senior Chandler Kemp had a big personal record to run 14:31.03, and junior Bobby Micikas was the final IC4A qualifier of the group with a time of 14:41.88. Sophomore Max Groves set an indoor best with a time of 14:58.52.

Back in Ithaca, the Cornell men were led by great showings in the field. In the throws, freshman Stephen Mozia and senior co-captain Bob Belden were first and second in the shot put with Mozia reaching 58' 5 1/4” and Belden producing a 55' 9 1/4” effort. Belden was also second in the weight throw in a seasonal best 59' 10 1/2” and junior Bob Fiedler joined Belden and Mozia as IC4A qualifiers with a third place throw of 55' 10 1/2”.

The high jump was also outstanding and was a great competition overall. Sophomore Tommy Butler cleared 7' 1/4” to place second and move to No. 4 all-time at Cornell while senior Chris Arlinghaus was third at 6' 10 1/4”. In the horizontal jumps, Cornell had several other Eastern qualifiers. Sophomore Steven Bell won both the long jump and triple jump, reaching 23' 4 3/4” and 48' 6”. Senior Chase Aaronson was second in the long jump at 23' 3 1/2” (an IC4A qualifier) and sophomore Montez Blair was third at 23' 0”. Sophomore Dan Scott was second in the triple jump in an IC4A-qualifying 47' 9 1/4”. And in the heptathlon, freshman Nick Athanapolous was second with a two-day total of 4,554.

On the track, seniors Brian Freitas and Thomas went 1-2 in the 500, as both bettered the IC4A standard, Freitas running 1:04.80 and Thomas 1:05.11. Freshman Jon Hanninen was third in 1:06.02. The Big Red had another impressive sweep in the 400 as senior Ken McClain won in 49.86 with sophomore Mike Rabbitt (50.25) and freshman Cisco Olloqui (50.56) placing second and third. Also placing first was Eric Bice in the 1000 in 2:31.24. The Big Red also won both the 4x400 (3:20.16) and the 4x800 (7:59.59).

Further IC4A-qualifying performances came in the 60 dash and 60 hurdles. Senior co-captain Dan Hagberg ran 8.07 for second in the hurdles and in the 60, Aaronson was second in 6.85 (fifth all-time at Cornell), junior Jedidiah Adarquah-Yiadom was third in 6.89 and sophomore Kinsley Ojukwu was fourth in 6.93.

Next up for Cornell is the Marc Deneault Invitational on Saturday in Barton Hall. The Indoor Heps return to Barton Hall on Feb. 25-26.
