Men's Track in Second After First Day of Heptagonal Championships

Day One Results

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell men's track and field team sits in second place after the first day of the 2012 Indoor Heptagonal Championships, 12 points behind first-place Princeton but with a good shot to move up on Sunday.

Cornell qualified 14 athletes for Sunday's finals, including four in the 60-meter dash. Chase Aaronson, Chris Bain and Kinsley Ojukwu took the first three places during the 60-meter prelims, and Jedidiah Adarquah-Yiadom placed seventh overall to move on to Sunday.

Aaronson and the Big Red had a great day on the long jump. Four Cornell athletes scored, with Steven Bell winning the jump with an ECAC-qualifying 7.42 meters. Aaronson took second in 7.31 meters, Montez Blair was fourth with 7.18 meters and Vince Formica scored sixth with a jump of 7.09 meters.

Also scoring for the Big Red on Saturday were two pole vaulters. Sophomore Peter Roach tied for fourth with a vault of 15' 9”, and Keith Rayburn took sixth with the same vault.

In the weight throw, Cornell had two throwers score. Senior Bob Belden threw 59' 2 1/4 to take second, while Bob Fielder's 58' 1” was good enough to finish fifth. Stephen Mozia just missed scoring with a seventh-place 55' 10 1/2”.

Through three events in the heptathlon, senior Nick Huber is in first place (2,964 points), Formica is in second (2,903) and Chris Ryan is in eighth (2,620).

Also qualifying for Cornell on Saturday: Sophomore Mike Rabbitt qualified second in the 400; Daniel Thomas took second in the 500; Brian Freitas placed third in the 500; freshman Rutger Admirand won the 800; junior Nick Wade finished third in the 800; sophomore John Schilkowsky took sixth in the mile; senior captain Dan Hagberg won the 60-meter hurdle preliminaries; senior captain Nick Huber finished third in the 60 hurdles; Zach Zeller took fourth in the same event; John Hanninen placed sixth.

The Heps continue on Sunday at 11 a.m. in Barton Hall.
