WARWICK, N.Y. - In a special pole vault-only competition at the Hudson Valley Flying Circus Pole Vault Academy on Sunday, Karolin Wagner (Ribbesbuettel, Germany) of the Manhattan College women's indoor track & field team broke her own school record in the event. Wagner cleared 3.74 meters (12 feet, 3½ inches) to set the new mark and win the competition.
Her jump was two centimeters higher than the previous record (3.71 m, 12'2), which she set at the Brother Jasper Invitational on Dec. 9. After her clearance at 3.74 m, Wagner made three very good attempts at 3.85 m (12'7½), but she didn't improve her height. Finishing second behind her teammate was Sarah Moore (Irvington, N.Y.), who cleared 3.39 m (11'1).
In the men's competition, Savio Paul (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Yardley Keshinover (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) tied for first. Both Jaspers jumped 4.35 m (14'1). Paul's performance puts him at No. 2 all-time on the Indian national junior pole vault list.
Wagner is one of 17 Manhattan athletes (13 men, four women) that has qualified for next weekend's ECAC/IC4A Championships. Both meets get underway at 9 a.m. on Saturday in Boston. The women's ECAC Championships are the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center, while the IC4A Championships for the men take place at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center.
