Pompey Opens Season With First-Place Showing

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Former Manhattan College track & field star Aliann Pompey opened her 2012 season with a first-place showing in the 400 meters in a meet at the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center on Saturday.  She posted a winning time of 53.49 seconds.

"Aliann ran well to start her season, and, most importantly, she didn't interrupt her outdoor training for the London Olympics," said Pompey's coach, longtime Manhattan assistant Joe Ryan"She has done a great job recovering from a serious ankle injury sustained last year.  I'm looking forward to seeing her compete healthy, which certainly wasn't the situation in 2011."

This weekend, Pompey will represent her native Guyana at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul, Turkey.  She reached her first global final in the event at the 2010 World Indoors, finishing fifth overall.
