IRVINE, Calif. -- The Big Red men's track and field team concluded another terrific week of competition and training in California by performing very well at the UC Irvine Spring Break Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Cornell men had four event wins, 22 IC4A qualifiers and seven changes to the all-time school record lists over the two-day meet.

The hammer was the lone event for the Big Red on Friday, and junior Bob Fiedler got the meet started well with a big personal record to better the IC4A standard, placing third with a heave of 188' 2”, good for No. 10 all-time at Cornell.

Saturday got off to a very encouraging start in the 4x100 as the quartet of sophomore Chris Bain, junior Jedidiah Adarquah-Yiadom, sophomore Steven Bell and sophomore Kinsley Ojukwu moved to No. 4 all-time at Cornell with a first-place run of 40.62.

Not surprisingly, the Big Red had very strong showings in the sprints. Ojukwu placed first in the 200 in 21.46 and second in the 100 in 10.62, both IC4A qualifiers. Bain was fourth in the 100 at 10.70 and Adarquah-Yiadom was sixth in 10.75, also IC4A qualifiers. Adarquah-Yiadom came back later to get sixth in the 200 in 22.21. The 4x400 was also very competitive in easily eclipsing the Eastern standard, as a quartet of senior Dan Thomas (49.0), freshman Cisco Olloqui (48.1), senior Brian Freitas (48.1) and freshman Rutger Admirand (48.4) ran 3:13.97 to get third.

There were IC4A qualifiers in the hurdles as well as senior co-captain Dan Hagberg was fifth in the 110 hurdles in 14.56 while in the 400 hurdles, Freitas was fourth in 53.00 and senior co-captain Nick Huber was sixth in 53.33.

Another significant highlight on the track came in the 800, as the Big Red had an impressive 1-2-3-5 finish, with three runners under 1:51. Admirand crossed the line first in 1:50.22 (No.8 all-time) and was joined as an IC4A qualifier by sophomore John Schilkowsky (1:50.77) and sophomore Will Weinlandt (1:50.86); junior Nick Wade was fifth in 1:51.87.

Outstanding performances were certainly not limited to the track. Sophomore Montez Blair continued to impress by placing first in the high jump at 7' 1/2” (No. 3 all-time at Cornell); senior Chris Arlinghaus was second at 6' 10 3/4”.

In the pole vault, sophomore Peter Roach and freshman Keith Rayburn both cleared 15' 11” to qualify for the IC4As and in the long jump, Bell was third at 23' 4 3/4”, yet another IC4A qualifier. The throwers were busy as well. The tandem of freshman Stephen Mozia and senior co-captain Bob Belden continued to perform very well in the shot and the discus, bettering the IC4A standard in each event. Mozia was second in both events, reaching 57' 8 1/4” in the shot put (No. 5 all-time) and 168' 7” in the discus (No. 8 all-time) while Belden was fourth in the shot put (57' 3 1/2”) and third in the discus (164' 2”).

Several other Cornellians competed and placed in the top 15: senior Vince Formica (eighth, 22' 7 1/4”), senior Chase Aaronson (eighth, 22' 5 3/4”), senior Josh Cusick (ninth, 22' 1/4”) and freshman Jon Hanninen (14th, 20' 11 3/4”) in the long jump, sophomore Dan Scott (fifth, 46' 4”) in the triple jump, Hanninen (eighth, 14.95), junior Zach Zeller (ninth, 15.00) and Cusick (14th, 16.08) in the 110 hurdles, Thomas (eighth, 49.52), Olloqui (ninth, 49.60) and senior Tom Randall (11th, 50.26) in the 400, Zeller (12th, 55.08) in the 400 hurdles, and Randall (14th, 22.91) in the 200.

With the spring trip complete, the Big Red will compete on the East Coast for the first time this outdoor season on March 31 at Ithaca College. The team will host the Cornell April Open at the Kane Sports Complex on April 7.
