PALISADES PARK, N.J. - On a cold and rainy day at Palisades Park Sportsplex, the Manhattan College men's and women's outdoor track & field teams took part in the FDU Knight Invitational on Saturday.  The conditions weren't ideal from running, but that didn't stop the Jaspers from having several fine performances in the field events, highlighted by Phil Ragan's (Belmar, N.J.) school-record in the men's javelin.

Competing in his first collegiate meet, Ragan uncorked a throw of 64.95 meters (213 feet, one inch) to top Rajne Svenssohn's 10-year-old mark of 64.20 m (210'7).  With his record-setting effort, Ragan, who won the competition by more than seven meters, qualified for the IC4A Championships, NCAA East Regional and USA Junior Championships.

Rokas Kirlys (Kamaji, Lithuania) achieved the IC4A qualifying standard in two events.  He won the shot put with a toss of 15.65 m (51'4¼), then finished first in the discus throw (49.48 m, 162'4).  Roman Ewald (Olching, Germany) placed second behind Kirlys in both events, posting a distance of 15.31 m (50'2¾) in the shot put and 46.34 m (152'0) in the discus.  Ewald also finished second in the hammer throw, qualifying for the IC4A Championships with a 53.31 m (174'11) mark.  Anastas Papazov (Balchik, Bulgaria) was the winner of the hammer throw, recording a best effort of 63.64 m (208'9).

Other event winners on the men's side included Shledon Derenoncourt (Patchogue, N.Y.) in the 400 meters (49.91) and Neil Pinnock (Yonkers, N.Y.) in the long jump (5.77 m, 18'11¼).  Pinnock was also second in the triple jump (12.17 m, 39'11¼), while Jaylen Henderson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) captured second place in the 400 meter hurdles (1:02.85).

On the women's side, Doreen Horschig (Lumpzig, Germany) captured first place in a pair of events.  She notched a time of 16.48 seconds in the 100 meter hurdles and also finished first in the long jump with a leap of 4.95 m (16'3).  Horschig also grabbed fifth place in the javelin (27.89 m, 91'6).  Heidy Palacios (Yonkers, N.Y.) won the 400 meters by more than half a second, finishing in a time of 59.26 seconds, and Alexandra Cappello (Scarsdale, N.Y.) took first in the 3000 meter steeplechase (11:47.41).

The Jasper women also collected four second-place showings.  Ashley Bowman (Elmont, N.Y.) grabbed the silver in the 100 meters with a time of 12.94 seconds, while Janie Turek (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) was second in the 400 meter hurdles (1:09.84).  In the women's long jump, Victoria Fitzgerald (Plymouth, Mass.) took second with a leap of 4.80 m (15'9) and Jordan Rand (Colorado Springs, Colo.) secured third place (4.74 m, 15'6¾).  Rand also finished second in the triple jump (9.90 m, 32'5¾).

Next weekend, the Jaspers head to Princeton University for the annual Sam Howell Invitational.  Action gets underway on Friday and concludes on Saturday.
