PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Last year at the Metropolitan Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Andrea Nyback (Koping, Sweden) set a Manhattan College school record in the heptathlon while the Jasper men's squad earned the team title. The script for 2012 was the same, as Nyback bettered her previous record and the men's team defended its crown at Rutgers University's Bauer Track & Field Complex on Saturday.
Nyback won the competition by more than 500 points, finished first in four events and second in the other three. She compiled 4886 points, 30 more than she had while setting the record at this meet last year. Victoria Fitzgerald (Plymouth, Mass.) also contested the heptathlon, placing sixth with 3505 points.
Two athletes also qualified for the ECAC Championships on Saturday. Cara Rostant (Valley Stream, N.Y.) ran a personal-best time of 54.78 seconds to take first in the 400 meters. In the 100 meter hurdles, Doreen Horschig (Lumpzig, Germany) placed second in an ECAC-qualifying time of 14.18 seconds.
Karolin Wagner (Ribbesbuettel, Germany) cleared 3.40 meters (11 feet, 1¾ inches) to grab third place in the women's pole vault, while Alexandra Cappello (Scarsdale, N.Y.) was third in the 3000 meter steeplechase (11:44.51). Also finishing third was the 4x400 meter relay squad of Ashley Bowman (Elmont, N.Y.), Heidy Palacios (Yonkers, N.Y.), Ieva Vitola (Jekabpils, Latvia) and Rostant. The quartet posted a time of 47.78 seconds.
As a team, the Jaspers tallied 73 points to finish fourth overall. The women's title went to host Rutgers, which finished with 192 points.
On the men's side, Manhattan's 164.5 points were enough for a 14.5-point victory over the Scarlet Knights.
Leading the way for the Jasper men was Roman Ewald (Olching, Germany), who won two events and finished third in another. Ewald improved his season-best in the discus throw to 52.12 m (171'0), putting him in position to qualify for the NCAA East Regional in the event. Ewald also won the shot put with a distance of 16.44 m (53'11¼) and took third place in the hammer throw (54.25 m, 178'0), reaching the qualifying standard for the IC4A Championships in the latter. Rokas Kirlys (Kamaji, Lithuania) placed second behind Ewald in both the shot put (16.00 m, 52'6) and discus (48.50 m, 159'5), while Anastas Papazov (Balchik, Bulgaria) finished first in the hammer throw (63.57 m, 208'7).
Felix Siljeback-Larsen (Vasteras, Sweden) moved into fourth place on Manhattan's all-time list in the decathlon. He won the competition with 6902 points.
Phil Ragan (Belmar, N.J.) captured first place in the javelin for the third time in as many weeks. Ragan's winning mark was 59.80 m (196'2). Brian McGovern (Yonkers, N.Y.) won the pole vault with a leap of 4.95 m (16'2¾) to qualify for the IC4A Championships. In the triple jump, Trevell Moxey (Lansdale, Pa.) just missed reaching the IC4A standard. His best effort of 14.48 m (47'6¼) was just two centimeters short of the IC4A qualifier.
On the track, the Jaspers grabbed third place in a number of different events. Mikael Rojeras (Sala, Sweden) finished third in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:55.76. He also placed fourth in the 800 meters (1:54.96), just behind teammate Greg Perrier (Dix Hills, N.Y.), who registered a 1:54.86 clocking. Sheldon Derenoncourt (Patchogue, N.Y.) finished fourth in the 400 meters (48.96), then joined with Mike Carroll (Nanuet, N.Y.), Dan Duffy (Monroe, N.Y.) and Abdias Myrtil (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) to take third in the 4x100 meter relay (42.96).
Next weekend, Manhattan heads to Princeton University for the annual Larry Ellis Invitational. Competition gets underway on Friday night and concludes on Saturday.
