RIVERDALE, N.Y. - After posting impressive performances at the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships last weekend, Roman Ewald (Olching, Germany) and Andrea Nyback (Koping, Sweden) of the Manhattan College outdoor track & field team took home Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men's and Women's Performer of the Week honors on Tuesday. Ewald won two events and finished third in another, while Nyback broke her own school record in the heptathlon.
Ewald helped the Jaspers defend their Metropolitan team tile by taking first place in the shot put and discus throw, while also placing third in the hammer throw. Ewald improved his season-best in the discus, winning the competition with a toss of 52.12 meters (171 feet) to move into a position to compete at the NCAA East Regional in the event. Ewald's winning mark in the shot put was 16.44 m (53'11¼), and he qualified for the IC4A Championships with his third-place effort in the hammer throw (54.25 m, 178'0).
He becomes the fourth Jasper in as many weeks to earn Men's Performer of the Week honors, joining freshmen Anastas Papazov (Balchik, Bulgaria) (March 27, April 10) and Phil Ragan (Belmar, N.J.) (April 3).
Nyback recorded 4886 points to break the previous school record, which she set at the same meet in 2011, by 30 points. She won four of the seven events and finished second in the other three to win the competition by more than 500 points. This is Nyback's second MAAC Performer of the Week selection this year. She was recognized on Jan. 31 during the indoor campaign. Nyback joins Cara Rostant (Valley Stream, N.Y.) (March 27) as Manhattan's Outdoor Performer of the Week honorees this season.
The Jaspers return to action this weekend at the Larry Ellis Invitational on the campus of Princeton University. Competition gets underway on Friday evening and concludes on Saturday.
