ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red track and field teams are heading to Philadelphia this weekend to compete in the Penn Relays, one of the oldest track meets in the world.

The Relays, a three-day extravaganza of track and field, is the place where relay running began. The meet has been contested since 1895 and is one of the most presitigious in the world that involves all three major levels of track. Runners from high school, college and post-collegiate teams will flock to Philadelphia for the relays. Thousands of competitors and gigantic crowds will await the Big Red over the weekend.

Thursday's events begin at 10 a.m., and most of the Big Red women will compete then. The men's competition heats up on Friday, and Saturday is a day for members of both genders. Cornell will have runners competing in every day of the competition.

Also this weekend, Cornell will be hosting the Big Red Invitational on Sunday at the Robert Kane Sports Complex. For many of the Big Red athletes, this will be their final meet of the season. For others, the Big Red Invitational will be a huge chance to tweak their skills before the Outdoor Heptagonal Championships next weekend and the ECAC/IC4A and NCAA meets in the near future.

Live results and video of the Penn Relays will be available at thepennrelays.com.
