PHILADELPHIA - Manhattan College's Albert Johnson III (Painted Post, N.Y.) finished fifth in the men's long jump Championship of America at the 118th Penn Relays from historic Franklin Field on Friday. Johnson leaped 7.58 meters (24 feet, 10½ inches) to notch his second career Penn Relays top-five finish. He placed third in the event in 2010.
Roman Ewald (Olching, Germany) and Rokas Kirlys (Kamaji, Lithuania) both competed in a pair of events on Friday. In the Eastern section of the men's college shot put, Kirlys finished seventh (16.08 m, 52'9¼), while Ewald was 15th (15.24 m, 50'0). The pair returned later in the day for the college men's discus throw, in which Ewald placed 20th (47.25 m, 155'0) and Kirlys secured 22nd place (46.92 m, 153'11).
In addition, the heats of the women's 4 x 200 meter relay were held on Friday. Manhattan's quartet of Heidy Palacios (Yonkers, N.Y.), Ashley Bowman (Elmont, N.Y.), Ieva Vitola (Jekabplis, Latvia) and Cara Rostant (Valley Stream, N.Y.) took sixth in their heat and 28th overall in a time of 1:41.24.
Manhattan will conclude the Penn Relays with several athletes in action on Saturday. Anastas Papazov (Balchik, Bulgaria) (hammer throw), Brian McGovern (Yonkers, N.Y.) (pole vault) and Phil Ragan (Belmar, N.J.) (javelin) will all contest the Championship of America in their respective events, while Edward Brentnall (Atlanta, Ga.) is in the college men's hammer throw and Trevell Moxey (Lansdale, Pa.) is entered in the Eastern men's college triple jump. In addition, the Jaspers will run for the Championship of America in the men's 4 x 800 meter relay.
