UW-L Leads WIAC Championships; Vazquez Wins Title

Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's track & field squad leads after the first day of competition Friday at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Outdoor Championships at UW-Whitewater's Foster Field.  The Eagles lead with 63.0 points while UW-Oshkosh is second with 50.0 and UW-Stout third with 41.0. 

UW-Eau Claire is in fourth-place (36.0) followed by UW-Whitewater (29.0), UW-Platteville (25.0), UW-River Falls (18.0) and UW-Stevens Point (11.0).

UW-L is seeking its 22nd consecutive league title and 48th overall.

In Friday's action, Isaac Vazquez won the long jump (25-0 1/2) while setting a facility record.  The Eagles' Clark Lundquist was third (23-10 1/4), Troy Brooks fifth (23-6) and Brett Davis seventh (22-11) in the long jump.

UW-L also won the 4x800-meter relay (7:41.57) Friday with Eric Smits, Sean Royer, Jerry Kerska and Garrett Kerska.

The Eagles' Jeremiah Burish placed second (16-1 1/4) while Rob Rohe tied for third (15-7 1/4) in the pole vault.  Jeffrey Hill finished seventh (15-7 1/4) and Gary Trkula tied for ninth (14-7 1/2).

John Cooper was ninth in the hammer throw (175-7).

On the track, Alex Ciesielski finished third (31:19.18), Josh Kaul fourth (31:29.19) and Josh Dedering eighth (32:09.00) in the 10,000-meter run while Andrew Rohlman finished fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:26.13).

In preliminary track action Friday, UW-L's Terrence Thigpen advanced to Saturday's final in the 100-meter (10.63) and 200 (21.49) meter dashes.  The Eagles' Jared Sitte also qualified in the 100-meter dash (10.83).

Also advancing to Saturday's finals included Adam Nichols in the 110-meter hurdles (14.69); Travis Gallick in the 400-meter hurdles (55.21) and Aric Hoeschen in the 400-meter dash (48.71). 

Jamie Bottcher (1:54.49) and Smits (1:56.01) advanced in the 800-meter run.

Action concludes Saturday, May 5 at UW-Whitewater.
