Jasper Men Lead After Day One of MAAC Championships

Day One Results

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - After the first day of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the Manhattan College men's team sat in first place.  Patrick Consoli (Cliffside Park, N.J.) and Anastas Papazov (Balchik, Bulgaria) won individual titles to give the Jaspers an advantage of nearly 30 points over defending champion Rider.  The Manhattan women, meanwhile, were fourth after six events at the Rider University Track & Field Complex.

Consoli led a Manhattan sweep in the javelin, as the Jaspers picked up 30 points (the maximum for one school) in the event.  His winning throw was a 56.58-meter (185 feet, seven inches) effort.  Kevin Rheinheimer (Newton, N.J.) finished second (50.92 m, 167'1), while Phil Ragan (Belmar, N.J.) was third (45.53 m, 149'4).  Edward Brentnall (Atlanta, Ga.) (fourth, 45.47 m (149'2)) and Doug Montazella (Mahopac, N.Y.) (fifth, 44.69 m (146'7)) rounded out the sweep.

The Jaspers also collected major points in the men's hammer throw, where Papazov led a 1-2-4-5 finish.  Papazov had the only 60-meter throw of the competition, and his winning effort of 63.27 m (207'7) was nearly six meters further than teammate Roman Ewald (Olching, Germany), who took second with a toss of 57.49 m (188'7).  Brentnall grabbed fourth place (53.55 m, 175'8), and Rokas Kirlys (Kamaji, Lithuania) placed fifth (48.34 m, 158'7).

In the 4x800 meter relay, the quartet of AJ Hanifin (Long Valley, N.J.), Salim Corbin (Patterson, N.J.), Nick Italiano (New York, N.Y.) and Kevin D'Emic (Rockaway Point, N.Y.) ran a time of 7:42.27 to take the silver medal behind Iona.  Albert Johnson III (Painted Post, N.Y.) added a bronze in the long jump with a leap of 6.84 m (22'5¼).

Manhattan compiled 71 points on day one.  Rider was second with 42 points, while Marist sat in third place with 31 points.

On the women's side, the Jaspers were led by Andrea Nyback (Koping, Sweden), who notched a pair of second-place finishes.  Nyback, who has three more events tomorrow, won the silver in both the javelin (33.02 m, 108'4) and long jump (5.51 m, 18'1) on Saturday.  Manhattan also finished second in the 4x800 relay, as Maria Jangsten (Gothenburg, Sweden), Elizabeth Rosenberger (Ramsey, N.J.), Janie Turek (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) and Emmy Koskinen (Sodertalje, Sweden) registered a 9:15.03 clocking.  Doreen Horschig (Lumpzig, Germany) added points in the long jump (third, 5.23 m (17'2)) and javelin (eighth, 27.66 m (90'9)), while Alexandra Cappello (Scarsdale, N.Y.) took fifth in the 3000 meter steeplechase (11:56.65).

Despite sitting in fourth place, the Jaspers are just 11 points out of second.  Defending champion Saint Peter's leads with 68 points, while Rider is second (47), followed by Iona (38) and Manhattan (36).

Competition resumes at 11 a.m. on Sunday with the men's high jump, women's triple jump and men's shot put.  Action gets underway on the track with the men's and women's 4x100 meter relays at 12 p.m.  The MAAC team champions will be crowned after the 4x400 meter relays, which are scheduled to go off at 3:15 p.m.
