ITHACA, N.Y. – The field for the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Regional was announced Thursday afternoon, and the Big Red learned it will have 27 athletes competing in NCAAs. Twenty-six will start their national championship aspirations in Jacksonville, Fla., next weekend while one has already earned a berth in June's Outdoor National Championship.

Thirteen men's athletes will be making the trip to Jacksonville, while 13 have also made the cut on the women's side. The NCAA splits the country at the Mississippi River, and the top 48 declared athletes from the east and west in most events get to participate in regionals. The top 12 in each event from both regions advance to the finals two weeks later.

In the women's heptathlon and men's decathlon, the top 24 athletes from around the country are given automatic berths in the national championship meet on June 6-9.

The good news for Cornell starts in the decathlon, as senior co-captain Nick Huber is in the mix for a national title. Huber qualified for the decathlon thanks to a school-record 7,632-point effort earlier this season. He won the Ivy League Outdoor title in the decathlon and also claimed the indoor title in the heptathlon this year. Huber is the 13th overall qualifier for the decathlon. He will skip the Jacksonville Regional and go straight to the national championship meet in Des Moines, Iowa in early June.

Freshman Stephen Mozia and senior Bob Belden each qualified for a school-high two events, the shot put and the discus throw. Mozia was the Outdoor Heps champion in the shot put this year and holds the freshman school record for the discus.

The women's announcement was highlighted by distance runner Katie Kellner, who will compete in the 10K in Jacksonville as the top seed. Her run of 32:58.73 earlier in the season is the East Region's best time this year. Also running distance races for the women will be Rachel Sorna and Genna Hartung in the 3K steeplechase and Devin McMahon in the 10K.

On the men's side, distance runner Brett Kelly will also take part in the 10K.

Three hurdlers between the two teams will also be heading to Florida next weekend. Senior co-captain Molly Glantz qualified for the 400 hurdles, while Kenny McClain did the same for the men. Senior co-captain Dan Hagberg made the cut for the 110 hurdles as well.

The Cornell men had two qualifiers for the 800-meter dash: Freshman Rutger Admirand and sophomore Will Weinlandt. They will be joined on the track as well by the women's 4x400 team consisting of Zena Kolliesuah, Kelsey Reimnitz, Katie Woodford and Ebolutalese Airewele.

Besides the shot put and discus, Cornell had 10 other athletes qualify for field events. For the women, Ailish Hanly (high jump), Claire Dishong (pole vault), Anjelique Parnell (long jump) and Victoria Imbesi (javelin) will round out the team heading south. For the men, Montez Blair (high jump), Tommy Butler (high jump), Peter Roach (pole vault), Steven Bell (long jump), Dan Scott (triple jump) and Chase Aaronson (long jump) will have their chance to make the national championship. Blair competed at the Indoor National Championship back in March.

The Outdoor National Championship is held from June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa.
