ITHACA, N.Y – The NCAA East Regional gets underway for the men's and women's track team on Thursday, with 25 athletes flying down to Jacksonville, Fla., for a chance to earn a spot in the NCAA Championships.

Cornell is nearly complete with its outstanding 2012 outdoor season that saw the women's track team win the Outdoor Heptagonal Championships and place third at the Outdoor ECAC Championships while the men took second at Outdoor Heps and second at the IC4A Championships.

The season will culminate over three days in sunny Florida, where the temperatures are expected to hover around the high 80s all weekend. With two weeks since the team's last meet, though, Cornell should be fully rested and prepared for the Sunshine State's sunshine. Cornell has the second-largest contingent among Ivy League schools for the men and more athletes competing on the women's side than any other Ancient Eight school.

All individual events have 48 athletes competing for 12 spots in the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Combined with the West Regional taking place in Austin, Texas this weekend, 24 total athletes will earn a trip to the NCAA Championships in two weeks. For the relays, 24 teams will race in each regional this weekend, and the top 12 from each will move on to the NCAAs.

Cornell's weekend begins when Stephen Mozia and Bob Belden take part in the discus throw at 1 p.m. on Thursday. Steven Bell and Chase Aaronson also begin their run at a long jump berth at the same time. A little later at 4:30 p.m., junior Victoria Imbesi will attempt to qualify for the national championship in the javelin. Sophomore Anjelique Parnell rounds out Cornell's field day at 5:30 p.m. when the long jump begins.

Senior co-captain Molly Glantz will be Cornell's first track athlete to compete when the 400-meter hurdles prelims take place at 5 p.m. on Thursday. Glantz will be followed closely by Kenny McClain, hurdling 400 meters at 5 p.m. Freshman Rutger Admirand and sophomore Will Weinlandt are next, and their 800-meter preliminary race will be at 8:10 p.m. The 10K prelims come next, with Katie Kellner, Devin McMahon and Brett Kelly will vie for a spot in the NCAAs with his 10K run.  The 10Ks will take place at 9 p.m. and 9:40 p.m., closing out Thursday's competition.

Friday's field events get started in the early morning, and Claire Dishong will attempt to qualify in the pole vault at 11 a.m. Dan Scott will get his opportunity at a triple jump qualification at 4:30 p.m., and Ailish Hanly will have her turn at a high jump qualification at 5 p.m.

On Friday on the track, Weinlandt and Admirand will hope to still be competing in the 800 finals at 7 p.m. McClain and Glantz will have their chance for an NCAA berth with the 400 hurdles finals Friday at 7:30 and 7:45 p.m., respectively. The Big Red's other track event of the day is the 3K steeplechase featuring Genna Hartung and Rachel Sorna. A spot in the top 12 would put them in the NCAA Championship.

The final day of competition should prove exciting, as. Peter Roach begins an NCAA title quest in the pole vault at 11 a.m. At 5 p.m., 2012 Indoor NCAA Championship qualifier Montez Blair and teammate Tommy Butler will get their chance at the high jump while Mozia and Belden try to qualify for their second event in three days. Both will be taking part in the shot put, which opens Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m.

On the track Saturday, the women's 4x400 team of Zena Kolliesuah, Kelsey Reimnitz, Katie Woodford and Ebolutalese Airewele will close out the competition at 9:45 p.m.

Senior co-captain Nick Huber has already qualified for the NCAA Championships in the decathlon, which will be held June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa with the rest of the championship events.

Last season, Cornell had three men advance from regionals to make the NCAA Championships, while the women went without a representative in the national meet.
