Nick Huber in Third After First Day of NCAA Decathlon

6/6/2012 5:59:00 PM

Day One Results

Huber, who was seeded as the 13th-highest-scoring athlete entering the day, finished in the top three of three of Wednesday's five events and was no lower than 11th in the other two. His total score of 4,065 points -- a personal record for the first day of a decathlon -- is just 122 points behind the athlete currently in first place.

The decathlon day began with the 100-meter dash at 1 p.m. eastern, and Huber's day was off to a great start. Running in the second heat, Huber took second place by a mere .01 seconds and scored 881 points with a time of 10.91 seconds. He was in third place overall in the 22-athlete field at that point.

In the long jump, the day's second event, Huber started with a jump of 21' 4 1/2” that put him in 16th place in that event. His second jump was more successful, though, as he improved by more than a foot to 22' 6 1/2 to leap into 10th place in that event and pick up almost 100 extra points. He remained in the top 10 after that event, coming in at eighth place overall through two disciplines.

Huber had even more success in the third event of the day, the shot put. After throwing the shot 45' 9 1/4” in his first effort, Huber bested that by more than four inches for his second throw, reaching 46' 1 1/2”. He finished the shot put behind only two other competitors, earning 732 points for himself. Through the first three events, Huber had 2,396 points and was in sixth place, just 81 points behind first.

Next in the high jump, Huber cleared the first four heights he attempted on the very first try before falling short of clearing the 6' 6 1/4” height. Huber finished the high jump in 11th and moved up to fifth place in the decathlon after four events.

The last event of the day was the 400-meter dash. Though he had to wait until the third and final heat to race, Huber made it well worth the wait as he finished second in the heat and second overall in a time of 48.15 seconds.

The decathlon competition wraps up on Thursday with the 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and the 1500. The 110 hurdles opens the day at 12:30 p.m. eastern. Kurt Felix of Boise State currently leads the pack with 4,187 points.
