2011-12 USTFCCCA Division I All-Academic Men's Track & Field Team
RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Recent Manhattan College graduates Roman Ewald (Olching, Germany) and Albert Johnson III (Painted Post, N.Y.) have both been named to the 2011-12 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I All-Academic Men's Track & Field team. They were among the 431 student-athletes from 148 institutions that were selected.
This marks the second time that Ewald has been selected to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team. He was previously honored in 2010. Ewald was named Most Outstanding Performer for Field Events at the 2012 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Outdoor Championships after winning the shot put and discus while also placing second in the hammer throw, as Manhattan won the conference title. He competed in all three events at the IC4A Outdoor Championships, finishing fifth in the hammer throw. A six-time MAAC All-Academic selection, Ewald was also named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District I Team.
Johnson also completed his collegiate eligibility during the outdoor season. He grabbed second place in the 200 meters and third in the long jump at the 2012 MAAC Outdoor Championships. In addition, Johnson placed fifth in the men's long jump Championship of America at the Penn Relays. During the indoor season, Johnson won the long jump at the MAAC Championships, then earned a silver medal in the event at the IC4A Championships. Also a six-time MAAC All-Academic Team honoree, he was an Academic All-District selection in 2011.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher. In addition, athletes must rank among the top 96 nationally in their event indoors or participate in the NCAA Outdoor Championships (including the Preliminary Round). Johnson was 16th in the long jump and Ewald placed 32nd in the discus at the NCAA East Preliminary.
