Women's Track & Field Team Earns Academic Award

New Orleans, La. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's track & field team has been named a 2012 United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III All-Academic Team.  The Eagles earned the honor after 3.38 cumulative grade point average.  A total of 137 institutions earned the award, including seven in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).  UW-L recorded the highest cumulative grade point average in the conference.

Ten members of the squad were also named to the 2012 USTFCCCA Division III All-Academic Team.  A total of 340 student-athletes representing 107 institutions compose the group.  UW-L's 10 All-Academic selections were tied for fourth-most.  The WIAC led the nation with 48 All-Academic choices, including 10 each from UW-L and UW-Eau Claire.

Senior Caitlin Wippermann of Lake Geneva (H.S.), juniors Nicole Flackey of Ladysmith (H.S.), Megan Marfilius of Prairie du Chien (H.S.), Rebecca Scheuermann of Eau Claire (Regis), Rebecca Schmidt of Whitefish Bay (H.S.) and Jena Weigel of Marshfield (H.S.), sophomores Kayla Ashland of Bloomer (H.S.) and Jenna Halvorson of Fairbault, Minn. (H.S.) along with freshmen Claire Elliott of Apple Valley, Minn. (Eastview) and Marissa Mahr of Stanley (Stanley-Boyd) earned individual All-Academic status with cumulative grade point averages of 3.30 or greater.

Ashland earned NCAA Division III All-America honors at the 2012 indoor championships after finishing tied for fifth in the high jump (5-5).  Wippermann, Halvorson, Scheuermann and Elliott also earned indoor All-America accolades after finishing third in the 4x400-meter relay (3:51.71). 

Elliott earned 2012 NCAA III Outdoor All-America honors with an eighth-place finish in the 200-meter dash (24.72). 

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and have met either of the following athletic standards: a student-athlete must have competed in an NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championship or finished the regular season ranked in the national top 35 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 25 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org.

UW-L finished third at the 2012 WIAC Indoor Championships and won the outdoor conference title.  It was the Eagles' 27th overall outdoor championship and fifth in the last six seasons.
