Lalang, Hollander named U Athletes of the Week

The PAC-12 Conference Championships may have been as good as advertised. Colorado (49 points) won the men's team title, Stanford (82) was second, while Oregon (43) captured the women's crown over Arizona (69).

This week's MileSplit U National Performers of the Week come from the PAC-12 and the Big West Conference. Arizona's Lawi Lalang and Cal Poly's Lauren Hollander each had impressive showings in their conference meets which landed them with U weekly honors.

Lalang took home the top honors for the second time this season, making him the first athlete to accomplish the feat in the history of the weekly award. The Arizona sophomore continued his undefeated season as he successfully defended his conference title in the 8,000-meter run, winning with a time of 22 minutes, 49 seconds.

Lalang's win didn't come easy though. He was tested once again by fellow teammate Stephen Sambu. Lalang and Sambu battled head-to-head through the entire race with Sambu placing second at 22:50. Lalang and Sambu went 1-2 for the second year in a row.

Arizona finished seventh as a team in the men's race.

Hollander earned her second national honor this week with this award. She was named the USA Track & Field Athlete of the Week earlier this week. This is not a surprise either, as Hollander won her first individual title at the Big West Conference Championships last Saturday in dominance fashion.

Just a freshman, Hollander completed the 6K course in 19:12.6, posting the nation's fastest time this season and breaking the previous course record by 45 seconds. In the process, she became just the second person in Big West Conference history to break 20 minutes.

With Hollander's win, the Cal Poly women were able to win the team crown.
