UW-L Second at NCAA Regional; Qualify for Nationals

NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Results

Winneconne, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's cross country team placed second at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Midwest Regional Saturday morning at Lake Breeze Golf Course. The Eagles finished with 114 team points while North Central College (Ill.) won the regional title with 58. UW-L and North Central both earned automatic bids to the NCAA Division III Championships scheduled for November 17.

Washington University (Mo.) placed third (135) while Wheaton College (Ill.) was fourth (140) and UW-Eau Claire fifth (145). The University of Chicago, Ill. was sixth (171) followed by UW-Stout (178), UW-Platteville (225), Augustana College, Ill. (251) and UW-Stevens Point (252) to round-out the top-10. A total of 39 teams competed.

Josh Kaul was UW-L's top finisher Saturday, placing 14th overall with a time of 24:55.91 on the 8,000-meter course. The Eagles' Josh Dedering was 19th (25:05.05) and Nate Routhier placed 20th (25:05.07).

UW-L's Jacob Peterson finished 30th (25:12.07) while Sam Simones was 31st (25:12.54), Tom Linner 33rd (25:13.05) and Garrett Kerska 45th (25:33.34).

Kaul, Dedering, Routhier, Peterson, Simones and Linner each earned NCAA Division III All-Region honors.

UW-Stout's Tim Nelson won the individual title with a time of 24:24.67. A total of 271 runners competed.

"I am proud of these men and what they have accomplished so far," said first-year UW-L head coach Derek Stanley. "This meet is only a gateway to the national meet and we treated it that way in our preparation. We came to take care of business today and we did what we needed to do. It was consistent with our other efforts this year. It was not our best race so we will need to freshen up the legs for next Saturday.

"This is a proud day for the Eagles' cross country program, the department, the parents, the alumni and other supporters," added Stanley. "Bringing these two programs together has enabled both to achieve a high level of success."

UW-L returns to action Saturday, November 17 at the NCAA Division III Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana.
