Joel Whittington was just one of several Wabash track and field athletes that competed against Division I athletes from Indiana, Kentucky, Ball State and Butler Friday night at the Hoosier Open. Whittington set a new Wabash record in 300-meter dash at the event.
The sophomore took third place among a field of 11 other Division I athletes, setting the new school mark with a time of 35.32. That broke the old record of 35.90 set by teammate
John Haley in 2011.
Wabash posted top results in the 60-meter high hurdles, as well. Matt Dickerson and
Nathan Mueller qualified for the finals of that event, each finishing with top-eight times in the preliminary race. Dickerson ran the fifth-quickest time in prelims at 8.43, while Mueller was seventh-fastest among the field of DI runners with a time of 8.47.
Patrick Posthauer just missed joining them in the finals, finishing in 8.84 with the 10th-fastest time in the prelims.
Both Mueller and Dickerson improved their times in the finals. Mueller finished fourth overall by crossing the line in 8.38, 5/100th of a second off the school record. Dickerson took sixth place with a time of 8.42.
Jake Waterman grabbed fourth place in the mile run with a time of 4:20.30.
Nick Boyce finished 10th in the race with a time of 4:26.70.
Cole Hruskovich finished 13th (4:34.22).
Shane Hoerbert took third place in the 5,000-meter run by finishing in 15:18.24.
Billy McManus added a seventh-place finish (15:40.18).
Daniel Hoover took eighth place (16:07.55).
Joel Beier and Derek De St. Jean competed in the shot put and weight throw. Beier took 8th place in the shot with a mark of 14.48 meters (47 feet, 6.25 inches). De St. Jean finished 10th (13.51 meters; 44 feet, 4 inches). De St. Jean added a 10th-place finish in the weight throw with a top effort of 14.24 meters (46 feet, 8.75 inches). Beier finished 12th in the weight throw (13.65 meters; 44 feet, 9.50 inches).
