De'Anthony Thomas, Oregon's electrifying running back/receiver, has been practicing with the Oregon track team and could open up indoors at the UW Invitational, Jan. 25-26 in Washington's Dempsey Indoor.
UO coach Robert Johnson said Thomas would run the 60-meter dash indoors this season.
Thomas competed in the latter part of the 2012 outdoor season for Oregon, and anchored the Ducks' 4x100 relay to a second-place finish at the Pac-12 Championships.
He was a track & field star at Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles, twice winning the L.A. city title in the 100 and once in the 200.
He was clocked in a wind-aided 20.61 seconds in the 200 as a high school junior.
"He has some things to work on," Johnson said laconically.
The speed Thomas has is God-given.
He averaged 7.6 yards a carry for Oregon in 2012 and caught team-high 45 passes.
Thomas opened Oregon's 35-17 victory over Kansas State in the Fiesta Bowl with a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. He crossed the goal line with a lean as if crossing a finish line on the track.
"I think we pretty much realized he has track in his blood," Johnson said.
Johnson said Thomas' participation in track outdoors is still "to be determined. It will depend on how he takes care of his responsibilities."
Translation: he needs to continue to bear down in the classroom.
