Before my original post got sidetracked.... I really enjoyed this past XC season and we have a nice collection of strong runners, BUT....I miss the great battles from what I consider the "Glory Days" like the following: 2010 FLRunners: 1 Clark, Jimmy Creekside HS 4:47.6 14:53.29 2 Pickering, Ryan 12 John I. Leonard HS 4:48.3 14:55.48 1 Or 2011 Pre-State: 1 #2030 Arroyo, Andres 11 Colonial HS 14:59.18 1 2 #1727 Clemente, Elliot 12 Belen Jesuit 15:02.73 2 Or 2009 FLRunners: 1 Mizereck, Matt 12 Leon HS 14:56.51 1 2 Del Valle, Armando 11 Christopher 14:56.84 2 Or 2009 Footlocker: 4 Matthew Mizereck 12 FL Tallahassee 14:51.00 4 8 Colin Barker 12 FL Atlantic Beach 14:53.00 8 10 Brian Atkinson 12 FL Melbourne Beach 14:57.00 10 Regardless of whether the courses were short (nod to RR), these were great races with great times. Watching Arroyo jog around unopposed by any Florida runner in 2012 made me nostalgic. Any predictions of what may become great battles in the future? Maybe Howell vs. Convey vs. Marquez next year and for Convey/Marquez next 2 years?

Sorry, Jason, I copied your post over here to avoid the Raposo meltdown on the other one...
Ahem. Boys, bringing things back to the original subject. I think @jdpsu is right and this year looks to be in line or maybe even slightly better than last year after FACA, NXN SE, and Foot Locker South. So the good news as far as depth goes is that we are still looking very good and in a general up trend. It is not a coincidence that things have been so much faster these last few years. And it's not the result of suddenly all the courses in the state are short--whether true or false, that doesn't change much year-to-year because it's all relative. And changing state venues shows that. And so do track times. So it really looks like Florida is starting to develop significantly greater depth than in the past. This is evident both with track and xc times. But I do also agree with @jdpsu that as far as the very elite... this year may be a slight down year. Someone may surprise, but Arroyo is really the only one favored to make Nationals. However, the more that the depth is developeded in the 15:30-16:00 or even sub 16:30 range... the more that bodes well for the future. And it means that in a year or two we should see some really great years for Florida guys on the national stage! Exciting!
I hope you're right and we see some of these kids "step up" to national level over the next couple of years. There are some very strong programs in Florida (quite a few in the Panhandle, Holy Trinity/Trinity Prep in 1A, Belen J in 3A, a ton in 4A (Colonial, Columbus, Plant, Mandarin, many others) that continue to produce great runners, so I have VERY high hopes!!

We finish 2012 with solid, but not elite, boys runners. As was shown at Ft. Locker South & NXN (and Great American earlier in the season), the Florida boys were just not competitive in a more National race. I looked back to 2008, where I consider to be the "foundation" for the most recent Florida boys "Glory Days" of 2009-2011 XC: 1. 15:06.28 Matt Mizereck FL Leon HS 2010 2. 15:07.99 Brian Atkinson FL Melbourne HS 2010 3. 15:16.74 Will Stanford FL Leon HS 2011 4. 15:19.00 Michael Wallace FL Bishop Kenny HS 2010 5. 15:22.00 Erick Montoya FL Estero HS 2010 6. 15:24.00 Armando Del-Valle FL Christopher Columbus HS 2011 7. 15:25.24 Derek Wehunt FL Sickles HS 2009 8. 15:27.00 Ryan Pickering FL John I. Del-Valle & Pickering were Sophs & Clemente was top Frosh.

@jdpsu Still not seeing the big drop off from 2011 to 2012 that was the start of this thread. True, there were no BIG wins at the national meets but that might be less contributable to Florida being down to other states being up. Here are the comparable numbers Footlocker South seeded boys team scores 2011 vs. 2012: 2011 - 11, 19, 27, 28, 29. 15:25 avg. 1:17:08 total. 0:23 spread. 15:11 - 15:33 2012 - 18, 19, 29, 30, 32. 15:26 avg. 1:17:14 total. 0:11 spread. 15:21 - 15:32 True, no Florida boys broke 15:00 in 2012 but without LER in the mix only 2 did in 2011. Here are the comparable numbers WITH LER counted for 2011: 2011 - Sub 15:01 = 3, Sub 15:31 = 9, Sub 16:01 = 56 2012 - Sub 15:01 = 0, Sub 15:31 = 8, Sub 16:01 = 51 A drop, yes. Big drop, no. IMHO. :-) ~Twangster

@twangster I agree, it's NOT a big drop, but......it really doesn't take much. It's like we were SEC champs and now we're 5th. We were spoiled with at least 1 representative in Ft. Locker Nationals the last 3 years PLUS we had the #1 team (Belen Jesuit) and runner (Clemente)at 2011 NXN Region, as well as 2010 champ (Del Valle) and 2008 champ (Atkinson)! Add in Daniel Moore at Great American last year and Del Valle in 2010 and you have a pretty good representation of Florida vs. zip this year.....

@twangster I agree, it was not much of a down year if you take LER out of the results from the past few years. Still not sure if we would see anyone break 15 next year at ARP, but it is possible! Great group of young talent coming up

@aholmes80 Im not sure about breaking 15min. but that does not mean the future of Florida Distance runners is slowing down anytime soon. If the weather is like it was this year I can see more than a hand full of Boys breaking 15:20. Thats taking into consideration that 3A and 4A will have the two latest races at the State meet next year. I personally think our sport is only getting stronger and faster when breaking 15:20 in a course that is not anywhere near flat and fast will not guarantee you a State title.. Future looks scary good!

@Gooch7 Florida took top 3 places and 4 of top 5 in the boys Freshman race at Footlocker-- and that did NOT include Marquez who went 15:37 in the Seeded race (and even faster on the more challenging State Meet course). I'm thinking the next 3 years are going to get progressively better and I will be surprised if in two years Florida doesn't have multiple qualifiers again. Also, there were several other sophomores under 16 this year, and some (Diaz and Khosla) well under.

@BConvey I agree. Back to my earlier comment from 2008: "Del-Valle (15:24) & Pickering (15:27) were Sophs & Clemente (15:40) was top Frosh". Fast forward to 2012: Convey (15:39) & Khosla (15:42) top Sophs & Marquez(15:33) top Frosh. 2010 was a great year for the 2008 guys. I think 2014 will be the next "great" year.

2013 - Sub 15:01 = 2, Sub 15:31 = 16, Sub 16:01 = 63 (45 of those on ARP)

I would say this is a sharp increase (20%) with quite a few of the top runners returning next year (7 of the top 10).

Since someone has to be a pessimist around here: This year was a step up and in the right direction. Got some strong runners and a number returning, as noted. However, one should note that Florida has a long way to go until we are the distance powerhouse we should/could be based on our population. Obviously Florida is absolutely dominant in sprints. But in distance we are middle of the pack. States like PA, VA, NJ, IL, and NY (and plenty of others) are kicking our tails both team and individual. Improvement is one step at a time and I applaud this current set of athletes, who are stepping it up. Let's just continue to up our standards and raise what we believe is possible.
I stand by my prediction from last year.....

@jdpsu As you should. I don't think Florida's ever had 9 returning guys under 15:30 before. I have to say, considering it was deepest year at Footlocker South this year, I was VERY discouraged at how poorly the South did at Nationals. It seems the last several years-- and likely to be several more, have an unprecedented amount of quality.

It looks like we updated this last year, and based on conversations it may be time to look at 2014 now. We predicted that Convey, Khosla & Marquez would be the basis of a great 2014. Unfortunately at FSU, only Khosla was able to run. I still hold out hopes for post -season for these 3 & a few others with Khosla leading the pack.

In looking at State Meet results, 2014 may be the high point for a few years. Here are the stats from State meet for Boys: # of Sub-16:00 Runners by grade: Seniors-22 Juniors-6 Sophomores-0 Freshmen-1 (Joey Fitzpatrick 15:35!!) I think 3 Juniors (Jacques, Berryhill & Cross) will definitely do great things in 2015, but behind them is probably Fitzpatrick (who joins an elite group as the only Freshman to break 16), but not too much depth.

The original post was when we had a lot of chatter about the runners. Interesting to see how predictions came through the years.

For younger guys this year. Trevor Foley ran extremely quick at UF. Also hope to see Fitzpatrick back soon!

I remember watching the FLrunners battle between Ryan Pickering and Jimmy Clark as a freshman and the older guys on my team saying that there was always a battle like that at FLrunners. I went every year after that and don't ever remember a race that even came close in comparison to that race. Pickering, Clark, and Mizereck were All-Americans in their senior years at FL Nationals, we haven't had anyone come close to that in several years. Elliot Clemente and the Belen team of 2011 is the last national powerhouse I can recall, and that was 4 years ago!

However, couple of young guys to watch: Soph Trevor Foley (15:34) & 8th Grader(!) Kayamo Galloway (16:02)....
