MONCTON, Canada --- University of Portland distance runner Trevor Dunbar finished strong at the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships with an 11th place showing in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:16.08 on Saturday. He was the top North American finisher.
"The World Championships experience was a great way for Trevor to end his season,” Portland men’s cross country and track and field head coach Rob Conner said. “Keep in mind he finished 11th in the world! Trevor has had a spectacular 2010, all while competing unattached collegiately. He will be a freshman in 2011 and that is really exciting!"
Dunbar adds to an impressive 2010 season which also included winning the United States Junior Cross Country National Championship and placing 29th at the World Junior Cross Country Championships earlier this year. He was the USA Junior 5,000-meter champion as well.
Collegiately, he bettered the indoor school record in the 3,000-meter run (8:01.87) and the outdoor record in the mile (4:01.31).
Dunbar and the Pilots will begin formal training for the 2010 cross country season in August, hoping to improve on the team’s 13th place showing at the 2009 NCAA Championship Meet.
